Ah, O rooster calling before dawn,

Come here; let me tell you what has become clear to me.

It became clear to me that I had been bereaved of young men,

the remnant of a people who bequeathed me tears.

And when I heard the mourning women lamenting him,

I consoled myself and knew for certain that I had no brother

like Sakhr son of Amr, the best of those I have known.

And how can I hope to live? I am utterly lost.

And why should I not weep for one who, if

my day had come before his, would have wept for me?

And if you spend the evening among Qays, Zayd, and Amir,

and Ghassan, you will never hear anyone speak ill of him.
