كُنّاwe were كَأَنجُمِlike stars لَيلٍof a night وَسطَهاin their midst قَمَرُa moon

We were like stars of the night, with a moon in their midst,
Dispelling the darkness—then the moon fell from among us.
ياO صَخرُSakhr ماnot كُنتُI was فيamong قَومٍa people أُسَرُّI am delighted بِهِمby them
إِلّاexcept وَإِنَّكَand indeed you بَينَamong القَومِthe people مُشتَهِرُrenowned
O Sakhr, never was I among people in whom I delighted
Without you being renowned among them.
فَاِذهَبso depart حَميداًpraised عَلىdespite ماwhatever كانَhas occurred مِنof حَدَثٍa misfortune
فَقَدfor indeed سَلَكتَyou have taken سَبيلاًa path فيهِin it مُعتَبَرُa lesson
So depart, praised, despite whatever has befallen;
For you have taken a path that holds a lesson.
