And every mortal is pelted by Time's hearthstones.

And every house with a lofty roof is demolished.

No commoner among them survives, nor any king

From among those the freeborn and the Romans have enthroned.

Indeed, nothing survives the onslaught of calamities

Except God—and the well-known, firmly rooted one.

And a report has reached me, not a lengthy one,

From a people whose thinking has long been empty babble.

Indeed, the choking bone you spoke of has lodged crosswise

Behind the uvulas; the throats could not swallow it.

    وَلَيسَ يَشمَتُ مَن كانَت لَهُ طومُ

    If Sakhr has departed, may the gloating fall upon you;

And no one of good lineage gloats.

Bitter calamities—the hardy man bows to them,

And the timid, owl-like fool submits to them.

Sakhr was indeed hardy, accomplished, outstanding,

Firm in resolve, descended from towering men.

So today he lies buried, there at a tomb,

In the midst of the burial chamber, with earth heaped upon him.

By God, I shall not forget the son of ʿAmr the Good, so long as there coos

A dove, or a frog swims in the deep water.

I say: Sakhr lies mouldering among the graves.

And how can I conceal it, while tears stream down?
