أَلاAh! ياO عَينِeye فَاِنهَمِريso pour forth وَقَلَّتand it was too little
لِمَرزِئَةٍfor a calamity أُصِبتُI was afflicted بِهاby it تَوَلَّتit passed
Ah, O eye, pour forth—yet even that is too little—
Oh eyes, shed tears copiously, and weep
For a calamity that befell me and has passed;
For the loss that has befallen me and made me melt,
لِمَرزِئَةٍfor a calamity كَأَنَّas though النَفسَthe soul مِنهاbecause of it
بُعَيدَshortly after النَومِsleep تُشعَلُis set aflame يَومَthe day when غُلَّتit was parched with thirst
For a calamity that makes the soul seem
A loss that seems to set my soul on fire
Set aflame just after sleep, on the day it was parched with thirst.
When sleep is far off on an uneasy night.
أَلاAh! ياO عَينُeye وَيحَكِalas for you أَسعِدينيhelp me mourn
فَقَدfor indeed عَظُمَتhas grown immense مُصيبَتُهُthe calamity of his loss وَجَلَّتand become grave
Ah, O eye, alas for you, help me mourn!
Oh eyes! Woe unto you! Gladden me,
For the calamity of his loss has grown immense and grave.
For his loss was immense and most profound.
مُصيبَتُهُthe calamity of his loss عَلَيَّupon me وَرَوَّعَتنيand terrified me
فَقَدfor indeed خَصَّتaffected me particularly مُصيبَتُهُthe calamity of his loss وَعَمَّتand affected everyone
The calamity of his loss weighs upon me and has terrified me;
His loss weighed heavy on me and shocked me,
For his loss has struck me in particular and everyone at large.
For it was grievous, all-encompassing.
لَوَif أَنَّthat الكَفَّthe hand تُقبَلُwere accepted فيas فِداهُhis ransom
بَذَلتُI would give يَديmy hand اليَمينَthe right لَهُfor him فَشَلَّتand it would be paralyzed
If a hand were accepted as his ransom,
If a ransom could be accepted to free him,
I would give my right hand for him, and it would be paralyzed,
I would have given my right hand though it be sundered.
كَماjust as والىhe continually bestowed عَلَيناupon us مِنof نَداهُhis bounty
وَشادَand built up لَناfor us المَكارِمَnoble deeds فَاِستَهَلَّتand so they shone forth
Just as he continually bestowed his bounty upon us
He always aided us with his call and presence,
And built up noble deeds for us, so they shone forth.
And initiated acts of generosity that flowed forth.
فَلَمso did not يَنزِعcease وَماand did not قَصُرَتfall short يَداهُhis two hands
وَلَمand did not يَبلُغreach ثَنائيmy praise حَيثُwhere حَلَّتthey dwelt
So he never ceased, nor did his hands fall short;
His hands never ceased giving nor fell short,
Nor has my praise reached where his noble deeds dwelt.
And my praise cannot reach where his virtues dwell.
