O eye, weep for Sakhr, for sorrows

and a thought that hoards grief in the heart's depths.

Indeed, I recalled Sakhr's generosity, and was stirred

by remembrance of the beloved, amid sickness and sorrows.

So weep for your brother, for orphans afflicted

by Time's reversals; every affliction envelops me.

And weep for the turbaned one, the adornment of commanders, when

the spears among them jerked like well-ropes.

And for the son of al-Sharid, whose lineage was never matched

in contests of honor—a true chieftain, not baseborn.

If Time had wealth in its ancestral store,

Sakhr would be Time's treasure among young men.

He spurns humiliation, achieves mighty deeds, lavishly spends

    precious possessions—neither craven nor slack.

Guardian of honor, fearless in battle's heat, rescuer

of plundered herds, hardy and never second-rate.

Climber of watch-heights, defender of closed-off passes,

frequenter of watering places, slayer of matched opponents.

Attender of councils, bearer of banners,

crosser of valleys, a wolf of the open plains.

He guards his companions when the blows grow fierce,

those resting at noon, when the camel-tarrer measures his tar.

And he leaves his adversary with yellowed fingertips,

as though his two robes were splashed with saffron.

He gives you what the soul can scarcely surrender,

from ancestral wealth—a lavish giver who never reminds you of his favors.
