وَخَرقٍand a wilderness كَأَنضاءِlike the worn tatters of القَميصِthe shirt دَوِيَّةٍa desolate waste
مَخوفٍfeared رَداهُits deadly peril ماnot يُقيمُstays بِهِin it رَكبُa band of riders
And a desolate wilderness, like the worn tatters of a shirt,
whose deadly peril is feared, where no band of riders stays,
قَطَعتَyou crossed بِمِجذامِon a swift-striding she-camel الرَواحِtravel كَأَنَّهاas though she
إِذاwhen حُطَّis taken off عَنهاfrom her كورُهاher saddle جَمَلٌa male camel صَعبُunruly
you crossed on a she-camel swift in travel, as though she,
when her saddle is taken off, were an unruly male camel.
يُعاتِبُهاhe reproaches her فيfor بَعضِsome of ماwhat أَذنَبَتshe did wrong لَهُtoward him
فَيَضرِبُهاthen he strikes her حيناًat times وَلَيسَand there is not لَهاon her part ذَنبُany fault
He reproaches her for some wrong she has done him,
then strikes her at times, though she is blameless.
وَقَدand already جَعَلَتshe has resolved فيin نَفسِهاher own mind أَنto تَخافَهُfear him
وَلَيسَand there is not لَهاfor her مِنهُfrom him سَلامٌpeace وَلاnor حَربُwar
And she has made up her mind to fear him,
and from him she has neither peace nor war.
فَطِرتَso you flew بِهاon her حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen اِشتَدَّgrew intense ظِمؤُهاher thirst
وَحُبَّand became welcome إِلىto القَومِthe company الإِناخَةُmaking the camels kneel وَالشُربُand drinking
So you flew along on her until, when her thirst grew fierce,
and the company longed to make the camels kneel and drink,
أَنَختَyou made the camel kneel إِلىbeside مَظلومَةٍan ill-placed tree غَيرِnot مَسكِنٍa dwelling
حَوامِلُهاits supporting boughs عوجٌcrooked وَأَفنانُهاand its branches رَطبُfresh and moist
you made her kneel beside an ill-placed tree, not at a dwelling,
its supporting boughs crooked and its branches fresh and moist.
فَناطَthen he hung إِلَيهاon it سَيفَهُhis sword وَرِدائَهُand his cloak
وَجاءَand he came إِلىinto أَفياءِpatches of shade ماwhat عَلَّقَhung up الرَكبُthe riders
Then he hung his sword and cloak on it,
and came into the shade of what the riders had hung up.
فَأَغفىthen he dozed قَليلاًa little ثُمَّthen طارَhe flew off بِرَحلِهاin her saddle
لِيَكسَبَso he might win مَجداًglory أَوor يَحورَmight return لَهاto her نَهبُplunder
Then he dozed a little, then flew off in her saddle,
to win glory, or for plunder to return to her.
فَثارَتthen she sprang up تُباريracing أَعوَجِيّاًan Aʿwajī horse مُصَدَّراًbroad-chested
طَويلَlong عِذارِbridle-strap الخَدِّof the cheek جُؤجُؤُهُhis breast رَحبُbroad
Then she sprang up, racing a broad-chested Aʿwajī steed,
with a long bridle-strap along his cheek, his breast broad.
