O eye, pour forth your copious tears,

and weep for Sakhr with tears streaming from you.

I lay sleepless and spent the night awake,

as though my eye had been kohled with stinging grit.

I watch over the stars, though never charged with tending them,

and sometimes wrap myself in the loose folds of my rags.

I heard—his news brought me no joy—

a messenger who rose to relay the echoes of tidings.

He said, “Your mother's son lies in the grave, and already

they have covered him over with planks and stones.”

Depart, then—may God not cast you away, such a man,

who warded off injustice and sought vengeance for blood-debts.

You bore a heart that would not be subdued,

set in a haft that was never weak,

like a spearhead whose form lights up the night,

staunch in resolve, freeborn and the son of freeborn men.

Weep for the tribe's young man, overtaken by his appointed death,

and every soul is bound for its appointed time and fate.

And I shall weep for you as long as a collared dove laments,

and as long as the stars of night give light to the night traveler.

Nor will I make peace with a people whose foe you were,

until the blackness of pitch turns white.

Tell Sulaym and Awf, if you meet them,

in a call for all to hear, not uttered in secret:

I mean those with whom he lodged—

Do you know the duty of protection owed to guest and neighbor?

Had one of you been among us, he would never have been harmed

until encounters leaving lasting marks had been faced.

As though your paternal aunt's son, indeed, and your guest

were among you—yet you did not defend him, betraying his protection.

Tighten your waistcloths until all is ready for you,

and gird yourselves: these are days of strenuous effort.

And weep for the youth of valor—his appointed death has reached him—

in every calamity that befell and every decree of fate.

No sleep until you lead the grim-faced horses,

casting forth miscarried fillies and colts.

Or dig a grave, for death is closing in

beside the houses on Ḥuṣayn and Ibn Sayyar.

Or wash from yourselves the shame that has cloaked you,

as women wash off menstrual blood when their periods end.

And war has mounted a humpbacked, skittish she-camel,

settling on a bare stretch of her back.

It was as though, the day they all assailed him,

they sought to bridle a ravening, maned lion,

guarding his lair, mighty amid battle,

rending men with fangs and claws,

rending men with fangs and claws,

pressing on through terror, a guide never at a loss.

A deep wound just above his breast gushes

with foaming gore, gushing from deep within his body.
