O eye, give freely of tears,

    Gushing forth and streaming down,

In a flood, like pearls breaking loose

And rolling along their stringers’ thread.

And weep for Muʿāwiyah, the young man,

And son of munificent, mighty chiefs,

And the resolute builder of lofty glory

    Amid towering pillars.

You find him lavish in his giving,

In times of trial, without regret.

    May God water his grave

With the fall of ceaseless gentle showers.
