ياO أُمُّmother of عَمروٍAmr أَلاwill you not تَبكينَyou weep مُعوِلَةًwailing aloud
عَلىfor أَخيكِyour brother وَقَدand already أَعلىraised his voice بِهِconcerning him الناعيthe death-announcer
O Umm Amr, will you not weep, wailing aloud,
O mother of Amr, do not weep helplessly
for your brother, whose death the herald has already proclaimed aloud?
For your brother as the mourner proclaims him
فَاِبكيso weep وَلاand do not تَسأَميgrow weary نَوحاًlamentation مُسَلِّبَةًclad in mourning
عَلىfor أَخيكِyour brother رَفيعِlofty in الهَمِّambition وَالباعِand reach
So weep, and do not weary of lamentation, clad in mourning,
So weep ceaselessly, lamenting bitterly
for your brother, lofty in ambition and mighty in reach.
For your exalted, noble brother
فَقَدfor indeed فُجِعتِyou have been bereaved بِمَيمونٍof one blessed نَقيبَتُهُhis nature
جَمِّabundant in المَخارِجِways out of difficulty ضَرّارٍgreatly harmful وَنَفّاعِand greatly helpful
For you have been bereaved of a man blessed in nature,
You have been bereaved of Maymun, whose leadership
rich in resource, mighty to harm and to help.
Was most eminent, a lion in times of peril
فَمَنso who لَناfor us إِنif رُزِئناهُwe were bereaved of him وَفارَقَناand he has left us
بِسَيِّدٍwith a chief مِنfrom وَراءِbehind القَومِthe people دَفّاعِa staunch defender
Who, then, if we have lost him and he has left us, will provide us
For who do we have if we lose him and he leaves us
with a chief, a staunch defender at the people's rear?
With no lord behind the people as defender
قَدindeed كانَwas سَيِّدَناour chief الداعيthe summoner عَشيرَتَهُhis clan
لاmay you not تَبعَدَنَّever perish فَنِعمَfor excellent is السَيِّدُthe chief الداعيthe summoner
Indeed, he was our chief, who summoned his clan.
He used to summon his tribe as their lord
May you never perish—for you were a fine chief who summoned!
May he not be far, excellent was that summoner
