Is it the misfortunes of the days that make your eye stream,

Weeping for Sakhr, though time holds things that make one forget?

Ah, who can soothe an eye whose tears never dry?

When I say, 'It has subsided,' it streams and brims.

For a noble man, immense in generosity, preeminent,

Whose eminence among his people is never altered.

For no aspiring man's hand has ever reached

A height of glory that your own attainment did not exceed.

Nor have those offering praise ever delivered a tribute in words,

Or spoken truly, without your merit being greater still.

Nor is rain on clumped, moist earth and soft hillocks—

Where the streaming downpour has gushed forth—

More abundant in bounty than your hands, or in blessings

That you spread to all; rather, your palms' bounty is greater.

And your neighbor is protected, unassailable, safely removed

From oppression: he is not harmed and does not abase himself.

A man among the people, his tent's portico thronged, as though he were,

When subjected to wrong, a fierce lion in his lair,

    Thick-clawed, a mighty, massive lion,

With a mate and cubs in the thicket's den.

A mighty lion, wide of maw, a lion of the forest,

Dreaded in encounter, his eyes wide and large.

A brother to generosity, renowned; generosity and liberality are his

Two allies, as long as Tiʿār and Yadhbul endure.
