هَريقيpour out مِنsome of دُموعِكِyour tears أَوor أَفيقيcome to your senses
وَصَبراًand be patient إِنif أَطَقتِyou can endure وَلَنand will not تُطيقيyou be able
Pour out some of your tears, or come to your senses,
Pour forth your tears or awaken me,
and be patient, if you can—though you will not be able.
And show patience, though you will not endure,
وَقوليand say إِنَّindeed خَيرَthe best of بَنيthe sons of سُلَيمٍSulaym
وَفارِسَهُمand their horseman بِصَحراءِin the desert of العَقيقِal-Aqiq
And say: “The best of the sons of Sulaym
And say that the best of Banu Sulaym
and their horseman lies in the desert of al-Aqiq.”
And their horseman in the valley of al-‘Aqīq
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَالبُكاand weeping مِنfrom بَعدِafter صَخرٍSakhr
كَسالِكَةٍlike a woman walking سِوىother than قَصدِthe straight course of الطَريقِthe road
And I, with my weeping after Sakhr,
I am, after the boulder, weeping
am like a woman straying from the road’s straight course.
Like one who walks the straight path.
فَلاso no وَأَبيكَby your father ماnot سَلَّيتُI consoled صَدريmy breast
بِفاحِشَةٍwith a shameful deed أَتَيتَyou committed وَلاnor عُقوقِunfilial conduct
No, by your father, I have not soothed my breast
By your father, I have not defiled my heart
with any shameful deed you committed, nor any unfilial conduct.
With any wrongdoing I did or filial impiety.
وَلَكِنّيbut I وَجَدتُI found الصَبرَpatience خَيراًbetter
مِنَthan النَعلَينِthe two sandals وَالرَأسِand the head الحَليقِshaven
But I have found patience better
Rather, I found patience to be best
than the two sandals and the shaven head.
Than sandals and a shaven head.
أَلاah هَلwill? تَرجِعَنَّsurely return لَناto us اللَياليthe nights
وَأَيّامٌand days لَناours بِلِوىat the sand-bend of الشَقيقِal-Shaqiq
Ah, will the nights ever return to us,
Oh, will not those nights return to us,
and the days we had at the sand-bend of al-Shaqiq?
And days that brought us the torment of loss?
أَلاah ياO لَهفَanguish of نَفسيmy soul بَعدَafter عَيشٍa life
لَناours بِنَدىamid the dew of المُخَتَّمِal-Mukhattam وَالمَضيقِand al-Madiq
Ah, the anguish of my soul, after the life
Oh, how my soul yearns, after a life
we had amid the dew of al-Mukhattam and al-Madiq!
For us with the sealed wine and the strait.
وَإِذand when يَتَحاكَمُseek arbitration الساداتُthe chiefs طُرّاًall together
إِلىto أَبياتِناour tents وَذَوُوand the holders of الحُقوقِrights
And when the chiefs, all of them, turned for judgment
When the nobles resort to judging poems
to our tents, as did those asserting their rights;
And those with rights, for arbitration,
وَإِذand when فيناamong us فَوارِسُhorsemen كُلِّevery هَيجاbattle
إِذاwhen فَزِعواthey answered the alarm وَفِتيانُand young men الخُروقِthe trackless wastes
and when among us were horsemen for every battle,
When among us are the cavaliers of every calamity,
when they answered the alarm, and young men of the trackless wastes;
When they are startled, and the youths of valor,
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle الحَربُwar صَلصَلَclattered ناجِذاهاits two molars
وَفاجَأَهاand took it by surprise الكُماةُthe armored warriors لَدىamid البُروقِthe lightning flashes
when war’s two molars clattered,
When the war brandishes its piercing blades
and armored warriors took it by surprise amid the lightning flashes;
And the warriors charge at the lightning’s flash,
وَإِذand when فيناamong us مُعاوِيَةُMuawiya بنُson of عَمروٍAmr
عَلىupon أَدماءَa tawny mount كَالجَمَلِlike the camel الفَنيقِthe pampered breeding male
and when among us was Muawiya son of Amr,
When among us is Mu‘āwiyah ibn ‘Amr
on a tawny mount like a pampered camel stallion.
Upon blood, like the Phoenician camel,
فَبَكّيهِso weep for him فَقَدfor indeed وَلّىhe departed حَميداًpraiseworthy
أَصيلَsound in الرَأيِjudgment مَحمودَpraised الصَديقِthe friend
So weep for him, for he departed worthy of praise,
Then weep for him, for he rejected a praiseworthy man
sound in judgment, with a praiseworthy friend.
Of sound judgement, commendable and true,
هُوَhe الرُزءُthe bereavement المُبَيِّنُunmistakable لاnot كُباسٌa big-headed fellow
عَظيمُgreat in الرَأيِjudgment يَحلُمُhe dreams بِالنَعيقِof the shepherd’s cry
He is the unmistakable loss—not some big-headed fellow,
He is the clear, guiding light, not an uncertain guide,
great in judgment, dreaming of the shepherd’s cry.
Great in judgement, he dreams of barking.
