Your two hands were not created for generosity,
Your palms were not created for generosity,
and their miserliness was nothing new.
Nor was their stinginess out of character.
فَكَفٌّfor one hand عَنِfrom الخَيرِgood مَقبوضَةٌclenched
كَماlike نُقِصَتwas reduced مِائَةٌa hundred سَبعَهseven
For one hand is clenched against good,
One palm closed off from good,
like a hundred reduced by seven;
Like a hundred diminished by seven.
وَكَفٌّand one hand ثَلاثَةُthree آلافِهاits thousands

and the other hand—three thousand
And a palm holding three thousand,
and nine hundred are its wont.
With nine hundred more allotted to it.
