أَلاWill ... not? يَنهاكَrestrain you شَيبُكَyour gray hair عَنfrom صِباكاyour youthful folly
أَلا يَنهاكَ شَيبُكَ عَن صِباكا
وَتَترُكَand you abandon ماwhat أَضَلَّكَhas led you astray مِنof هَواكاyour passion
وَتَترُكَ ما أَضَلَّكَ مِن هَواكا
Will not your gray hair deter you from youthful infatuation,
Will your gray hair not restrain you from your youthful folly,
and will you not forsake what in your passion led you astray?
and will you not abandon the passion that has led you astray?
أَتَرجوDo you hope أَنthat يُطيعَكَobey you قَلبُthe heart of سَلمىSalma
أَتَرجو أَن يُطيعَكَ قَلبُ سَلمى
وَتَزعُمَand you claim أَنَّthat قَلبَكَyour heart قَدalready عَصاكاhas disobeyed you
وَتَزعُمَ أَنَّ قَلبَكَ قَد عَصاكا
Do you hope that Salma’s heart will obey you,
Do you hope that Salma's heart will obey you,
while claiming that your own heart has disobeyed you?
while claiming that your own heart has already disobeyed you?
