يَقولونَthey say ليto me دارُthe home الأَحِبَّةِof the loved ones قَدalready دَنَتhas drawn near
يَقولونَ لي دارُ الأَحِبَّةِ قَد دَنَت
وأَنتَand you كَئيبٌsorrowful إِنَّindeed ذاthis لَعَجيبُtruly strange
وأَنتَ كَئيبٌ إِنَّ ذا لَعَجيبُ
They tell me, “The home of the loved ones has drawn near,
They say the abode of loved ones has drawn near,
and you are sorrowful—this is truly strange!”
Yet you are cheerless - how strange that is!
فَقُلتُso I said وَماand what تُغنيavail الدِيّارُthe dwellings وَقُربُهاand their nearness
فَقُلتُ وَما تُغني الدِيّارُ وَقُربُها
إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنexist بَينَbetween القُلوبِthe hearts قَريبُcloseness
إِذا لَم يَكُن بَينَ القُلوبِ قَريبُ
So I said, “And what use are dwellings and their nearness
I said: "What use are habitations and their nearness
if there is no closeness between hearts?”
When hearts cannot come together, close as they please?"
