Tell Sulayman that I am at ease without him,

and self-sufficient, though I possess no wealth.

What makes my soul generous is that I see no one

die of wasting, nor remain in one condition.

And indeed, between wealth and poverty lies a station,

bridled with a new rein, not a worn-out one.

Sustenance comes by decree; weakness does not diminish it,

nor does a schemer's resourcefulness increase your share of it.

If Sulayman is stingy with his bounty,

then God is the best to whom a request may be made.

And poverty, we know, lies in the soul, not in possessions,

and likewise wealth lies in the soul, not in possessions.

And wealth envelops people with no moral worth,

like a torrent covering the roots of decayed brushwood.

Every person is held in pledge on the path to death,

so work for yourself; I am occupied with my own concerns.
