أَنِستُI found comfort بِوَحدَتيin my solitude وَلَزِمتُand I kept to بَيتيmy home
فَطابَso became sweet الأُنسُcomfort ليto me وَنَماand grew السُرورُjoy
I found comfort in my solitude and kept to my home.
I became accustomed to being alone and remained in my home
So comfort became sweet to me, and joy grew.
So solitude became pleasant for me and joy grew
فَأَدَّبَنيso schooled me الزَمانُtime فَلاso not أُباليI care
هُجِرتُI was forsaken فَلاso not أُزارI am visited وَلاand not أَزورُI visit
Time has thus schooled me, so I do not care:
Time has disciplined me so I do not care
I have been forsaken, so I am not visited, nor do I visit.
I was abandoned so I neither console nor visit
وَلَستُand I am not بِسائِلٍone who asks ماas long as دُمتُI remain حَيّاًalive
أَسارَhas it marched? الجَيشُthe army أَمor رَكِبَrode الأَميرُthe emir
And as long as I live, I am not one to ask:
And I am not one who asks, as long as I live,
Has the army marched, or has the emir ridden?
Whether the army was captured or the prince rode off
