وَماand not هِيَit إِلّاexcept لَيلَةٌa night ثُمَّthen يَومُهاits day
وَما هِيَ إِلّا لَيلَةٌ ثُمَّ يَومُها
وَحَولُand a year إِلىto حَولٍa year وَشَهرٌand a month إِلىto شَهرِa month
وَحَولُ إِلى حَولٍ وَشَهرٌ إِلى شَهرِ
And it is only a night, then its day,
And year upon year, and month upon month:
مَطاياmounts يُقَرِّبنَthey bring nearer الجَديدَthe new إِلىto البِلىdecay
مَطايا يُقَرِّبنَ الجَديدَ إِلى البِلى
وَيُدنينَand they draw nearer أَشلاءَthe limbs الكَريمِthe noble man إِلىto القَبرِthe grave
وَيُدنينَ أَشلاءَ الكَريمِ إِلى القَبرِ
Mounts that bring the new nearer to decay,
And draw the noble man's limbs nearer to the grave,
وَيَترُكنَand they leave أَزواجَthe wives الغَيورِthe jealous man لِغَيرِهِto someone other than him
وَيَترُكنَ أَزواجَ الغَيورِ لِغَيرِهِ
وَيَقسِمنَand they divide ماwhat يَحويhe hoards الشَحيحُthe miser مِنَof الوَفرِriches
وَيَقسِمنَ ما يَحوي الشَحيحُ مِنَ الوَفرِ
And leave the jealous man's wives to someone other than him,
And divide the riches the miser hoards.
