    If there is any truly sound faith in us,

    Otherwise, highway robbery—and God is forgiving.

    And what matters is the heart: if it is intent

    On goodness, will all things come right?

    And if it is as I have seen among our companions:

    Outwardly, woe; inwardly, joy.

    فقد يحوق معه حق الفطور

    He recites, prays, fasts—it does not trouble us;

    For he gathers up his money for breaking the fast.

    A scholar—yet on one side he gapes,

    And on the other his creed soars, savage.

    White and crowned, he stays forever

    Busy with many voluntary devotions and ritual cleansing.

    ما أحد يغطى على شم البخور

    He wants to keep our masters' dignity spotless;

    No one can mask the scent of incense.

    وناس يزجد ورق حيله وزور

    And some rise before dawn, and some swear oaths to us;

    And some write up papers of trickery and forgery.

    But money, that daughter of fornication,

    Has compelled us to swear wicked oaths.

    وان قلت حقى بقى طبعه يفور

    If he devours you, then you are one of us;

    And if you say, 'My due!' his temper starts to boil.

    Go on: recite, call to prayer, and split our heads

    With supplications—and revive those in the graves.

    Neither the wise man nor our ignorant ones will prosper,

    Following in their wake, should they see the Day of Resurrection.

    And I ask You, O God: do not hold us to account,

    O Forgiver of sin, on the Day of Resurrection.
