    ويملى لك المتبان

    Greetings, as long as a tribesman winnows barley

    and fills your straw store;

    وما غرد الدشمان

    and as long as a donkey farts atop Marju

    and the dishman bird sings;

    إلى سابلة سعوان

    and as long as they send unleavened bread to the ploughman

    along the Sa'wan thoroughfare;

    and as long as the broad plain of Hawshan receives rain

    and Amran lies in ruins.

    To the man whose legs, whenever he means to walk,

    need ash-wood staffs cut for him.

    وهو يسرح الحرقان

    You'd think he still had a companion there with him

    as he lets loose his scorching farts;

    or else you'd think he had shat in bed,

    with a heap of dung in the sitting room.

    And bring good news: a bleater has come your way,

    or else you have a fattened beast—

    a ram lamb whose belly-fat has become like gourds,

    and whose wool is already plucked.
