فقالوا شَهدنا إِنك السابق الَّذي

فقالوا شَهدنا إِنك السابق الَّذي

بَراهنه بِالحَق تَقضى وَتَشهد

Then they said: We bear witness that you are the foremost, whose

They said: "We testify that you are the foremost

proofs pronounce judgment and bear witness to the truth.

Who pledged with truth, judges and bears witness.

عَجزنا وَلا دَفعٌ لَنا في الَّذي بِهِ

عَجزنا وَلا دَفعٌ لَنا في الَّذي بِهِ

أَتيت وَقَول الحَق فَرض مُؤكد

أَتيت وَقَول الحَق فَرض مُؤكد

We have fallen short, and have no rebuttal to what

We are helpless, and have no defence against that

you have brought; speaking the truth is a firmly established duty.

With which you came, and the word of truth is a firm duty.

وَإِن عَلياً جاءَ بِالباطل الَّذي

وَإِن عَلياً جاءَ بِالباطل الَّذي

قَد أَخزاه حَتّى قَد عَراه التبلد

قَد أَخزاه حَتّى قَد عَراه التبلد

And indeed Ali has brought the falsehood that

And Ali came with falsehood, which

has disgraced him, until dullness overtook him.

Disgraced him until denial has stripped him bare.

وَمَن يَنتحل ما لَيسَ فيهِ بمحسنٍ

وَمَن يَنتحل ما لَيسَ فيهِ بمحسنٍ

فَذَلك عِندَ الامتحان المُفند

فَذَلك عِندَ الامتحان المُفند

And whoever lays claim to what he is not proficient in—

He who claims what he has no right to

that person is discredited when put to the test.

Is, at the time of trial, found wanting."
