The ways of this world are manifold.
The fortunes of this world have different forms
The shrewd, wise man is made to bear its burden.
The wise and prudent bear its burden
وَلِلأَيامand the days have طَبعa nature مُستَحيلever-changing
فَلاso neither دعةٌease تَدومendures وَلاnor لَغوبweariness
And the days have an ever-changing nature:
And the days have an unchangeable nature
So neither ease nor weariness endures.
So no calm or distress lasts forever
فَلاso do not تَفرَحrejoice إِذاwhen دَنَتdraw near الأَمانيhopes
وَلاand do not تَحزَنgrieve إِذاwhen دَهتِstrike الخُطوبcalamities
So do not rejoice when hopes draw near,
So do not rejoice when wishes draw near
Nor grieve when calamities strike.
Nor grieve when calamities strike
فَغايةfor the end كُلevery عاصِفَةٍstorm سُكونcalm
وَغايةand the end كُلُevery ساكنةstillness هُبوبthe wind's rising
For every storm ends in calm,
For the end of every storm is stillness
And every calm ends in a rising wind.
And the end of every stillness is blowing

لَدَيهِto him القارthe bitter herb وَالحُلوand the sweet الشَنيبcool and refreshing
And whoever understands time will find no difference
He who knows time remains indifferent
Between the bitter herb and cool, refreshing sweetness.
To both standing still and flowing
وَماand what نَبغيهِwe seek it مِنfrom زَمَنan age لَئيمbase
أَخوa man of الكَرَمgenerosity الصَريحgenuine بِهِin it مَعيبdeemed flawed
And what can we seek from a base age
And we do not expect virtue from an ignoble age
Where a man of genuine generosity is deemed flawed?
Where the generous man who censures it is blamed
يُصابis harmed لِفَضلهِfor his virtue ذوthe possessor of الفَضلvirtue فيهِin it
فَيُخفيهِso he hides it كَماas تُخفىare hidden العُيوبfaults
A man of virtue is harmed there for his virtue,
The virtuous are blamed for their merit in it
So he hides it as faults are hidden.
Just as defects are concealed

May the Guardian deliver you from its harm,
Spare me, O indifferent ones, from harm
For I have a share in what has afflicted you.
For I have no share in what has led you astray
