Is it me you reproach, poet of the rabble,

ignorantly exposing yourself to the brand of my satire?

O suitor wooing satire's virgin with his reproach,

I do not see you among her worthy equals.

In satire lies the elevation of every base man,

and the loss lies in acting foolishly against fools.

If you seek to match my lineage, borrow

a pedigree; I will answer you, for you are no equal of mine.

Do you dare assail me in particular, O ass,

when lions have feared the dread of facing me?

Would that I knew what incited you against me!

Did you feel safe from my violence and my fury?

The horsemen of my words, if they charge, are feared

by the horsemen of every green battalion.

How can you escape my claws in a land

where my earth is spread out, and my sky as well?

I have a keen sword: never has it been drawn from its sheath

by anyone who escaped still happy.

Had you sense, you would not obey every man,

a false claimant to lineage, forever going about with slander.

You muddied the purity of my affection, after

I had given it sincerely to you; true loyalty is mine.

You chose to anger me at a spiteful foe's remark,

though you should rather have sought to please me.

You sought to deny my virtues, yet testified for me,

since your censure became a witness for the worthy.

Has madness seized you, or were you overwhelmed by their light,

so that you sought to cover their suns with a cloak?

    هَل قِيسَت الدَأماء بِالاحساء

    You claimed to be my rival in poetry;

has the deep sea ever been compared with sand-wells?

Poetry is surely abasement, not a rank of honor,

now that you, Yahya, have become one of the poets.

The rhymes, had I wished to master them,

would have come only beneath my banner's shade.

But I am content with enough, so I am not seen

    begging from princes and ministers.

    خَير الغِنى عِندي غِنى الحَوباء

    Wealth is not the money a young man amasses;

the best wealth, to me, is wealth of the soul.

If you have lacked riches, I possess

a soul whose contentment is the noblest wealth.

I have no wealth but my learning and sound judgment

that assails calamities with a gray-hued army.

I thirst, yet show no man my need,

while fire wells up from the stony ground's precinct.

I abhor wealth that brings humiliation,

and love poverty that brings high honor.

I see watering places I could reach if I wished,

but the free man's soul remains thirsty.

How strange that Yahya should vie with me in glory!

Has pitch-dark night ever vied with the midmorning sun?

Nothing deluded this wretch except that

he raced the half-bred steed of his verse on an empty course.

Could someone like you outstrip me in letters,

when my neighing steeds have won the stakes of eminence?

If the age I came into has placed me later,

what comes first in thought comes last in creation [uncertain reading].

Or if you do not understand what I say, I excuse you

for not seeing it with a blind eye.

O calf aspiring to the rank of Farqad,

far beyond you are the stars of al-Jawza'!

Modesty is indeed a praiseworthy trait,

but your face is no face of modesty.

By God, had I not seen it,

I would have thought it made of solid rock.

O man of monkey-like nature, for what

reason did you sever the cord—the cord of my brotherhood?

You censured me for no offense I committed,

and your gain was to disturb the water of my purity.

Because I said that you were wrong

in the unseemly thing you produced,

you likened a man you praised and his wife

    to a dove led as a bride to a broad-winged she-eagle.

Then you sought cover, thinking your statement like his,

behind one who likened the man he praised to Dhuka', the sun.

You supposed that Dhuka', when used in praise,

was, in wording, like the broad-winged she-eagle.

Is the daylight sun truly female

by nature? Say, if you are a companion of intelligence.

    فَالسَب فعلُ الدَعي وَالضُعَفاء

    Answer my statement with knowledge, not abuse;

abuse is the act of the baseborn and the weak.

A person does not support a statement he has made

with abuse, but with clear proof.

Were it not for a guardian of honor restraining

me from satirizing those who are not my equals,

I would send you scorpions from my speech,

fiercely stinging, beyond the charm-healers' powers,

and shut your mouth with a saying you would gladly pay ransom

to erase—with your own life and your fathers'.

But my exchanges with you are a recitation [wording unclear],

and a virtue to which my enemies have testified.

Take it, for it makes mankind forget:

O 'Itb, O son of the foul-smelling harlot!
