I seek generosity from a miserly age.

And reining in the headstrong is hard to achieve.

And I aspire to the heights, while the nights

shorten the reach of my soaring resolve.

And the Khatti spear's strides have already fallen short of what

I hope for—how then could the strides of praise reach it?

An age in which the shortest day

is as long as the longest lifespan they recount for Noah.

Children turn gray with dread at its horror,

and its living envy those in the grave.

Indeed, harm and dread have spread so widely that

every wind shakes the mountain among us.

So I complain to anyone I turn to only

as a healthy man complains to a wounded one.

And no one shares my cares with me,

that I might lament them as one who finds relief.

    وَإِلا تَعتَدي للموت روحي

    So come, O Death, or, O my soul, depart;

otherwise my soul will venture toward death.

If life brings humiliation upon you,

then honor lies in death that brings relief.

How long shall I select pearls of meaning,

stringing them on statues at the cost of my soul,

and meeting every man of blameworthy deeds,

sick in mind, with sound hope?

Yet no dismay, though they grow rabid and bite—

the calamities of fate and of this ravaging age.

For ill-omened birds may bring wishes to fulfillment,

and the augury of their auspicious bird may prove false.

And fate does not unfold by calculation,

so one need not despair of betterment or well-being.
