And an unadorned one—her neck I decked with glory,

And strung her a necklace of pearly bubbles.

I passed her heady wine among the drinkers, while the night,

Adorned with its stars, was like a gray-haired Black woman.

It chose its necklace from the pearls of the stars,

And singled out Sirius, the Crossing Star, as its central jewel.

And the Pleiades leaned westward, as though

They were adorning night's ear with an earring of their own shape.

I kept to pleasures with her, a willing participant,

And through her paid the prime of youth its due.

And cups of wine went round until they left me

Drowning in a sea of drunkenness, unable to see the shore.

    وَأَسقي فَلا أَسطيعُ قَبضاً وَلا بَسطا

    I am sung to, yet no ear takes in the strains of song;

And I serve wine, yet can neither close my hand nor open it.
