فَمنهم الكرّاش وَالسلاخ

فَمنهم الكرّاش وَالسلاخ

إِلَيهُم السبّار وَالطباخ

إِلَيهُم السبّار وَالطباخ

So among them are the tripe seller and the skinner;

Among them are the parchment-maker and the skinner,

With them, the prober and the cook;

To them belong the perfumer and the cook.

وَالصَنع المَألوفُ وَالجلاد

وَالصَنع المَألوفُ وَالجلاد

وَدابغ الجُلود وَالحِداد

وَدابغ الجُلود وَالحِداد

And the familiar craftsman and the executioner;

And the practiced craft and the executioner,

And the tanner of hides and the blacksmith;

And the tanner of hides and the blacksmith.

إِلَيهُم الرواس وَالبلاجي

إِلَيهُم الرواس وَالبلاجي

ثُمَ الفَتى المَدعو بِالسَراج

ثُمَ الفَتى المَدعو بِالسَراج

With them, the seller of cooked heads and al-Balaji;

To them belong the guide and the conniver,

Then the young man called al-Sarraj;

Then the young man called the lamplighter.

وَمنهم الفرانُ وَالزقاق

وَمنهم الفرانُ وَالزقاق

يَليهُم الرَقاق وَالمواق

يَليهُم الرَقاق وَالمواق

And among them, the baker and the wineskin maker;

And among them are the baker and the alley,

Following them, the thin-bread baker and the overboot maker;

Followed by the slaves and the water-carriers.

وَبائع الأَخفاق وَالخفاف

وَبائع الأَخفاق وَالخفاف

وَبَعده الكَبّار وَالدَفاف

وَبَعده الكَبّار وَالدَفاف

And the seller of akhfāq and the soft-boot maker;

And the seller of shoes and slippers,

And after him, the drummer and the tambourine player;

And after him the porters and the tambourine players.

وَمنهُم الفَران وَالخَراز

وَمنهُم الفَران وَالخَراز

إِلَيهُم الغربال وَالشكّاز

إِلَيهُم الغربال وَالشكّاز

And among them, the baker and the leather-stitcher;

And among them are the baker and the sack-maker,

With them, the Sieve and al-Shakkaz;

To them belong the sifter and strainer maker.

وَصانعُ الأَوتار للعيدان

وَصانعُ الأَوتار للعيدان

بَينَ مثالثٍ إِلى مَثاني

بَينَ مثالثٍ إِلى مَثاني

And the maker of strings for lutes,

And the maker of pegs for the tent poles

From third strings to second strings;

Between three and eight.

وَصانع المصحف وَالسَقاءُ

وَصانع المصحف وَالسَقاءُ

ثُمَ بَغايا القِفّة الغَراء

ثُمَ بَغايا القِفّة الغَراء

And the maker of Qur'an volumes and the water carrier;

And the copyist of the Quran and the water carrier,

Then the harlots of the splendid basket;

Then the whores with freckled skin.

ثُمَ الكِلاب الكثر وَالذباب

ثُمَ الكِلاب الكثر وَالذباب

لامين في قَولي وَلا ارتياب

لامين في قَولي وَلا ارتياب

Then the many dogs and the flies—

Then the many dogs and flies,

No lie in my words, nor any doubt.

There is no doubt in my words.
