Concealment is gone: this is no time for concealment.

Speak openly, then: wretched is the cloak of hypocrisy.

O you who, in your folly, shit into a deep sea

filled for you with foolishness and conceit!

If you repay our reproach with obscene abuse,

each vessel seeps whatever it contains.

A tangled dream appeared to you in sleep,

and you imagined yourself a worthy target for satire.

We do not aim at you with the poison of well-aimed satire:

what can an impotent man do with a virgin?

The dog is too filthy in form and nature

    to be perfumed with incense.

For a reason I shunned satire; often

abundant debris bars access to watering places.

In lampooning you, Ali, I am like someone

vying with a latrine brimming with farts.

Take your maiden's dowry; I do not like illicit intercourse with her.

Illicit intercourse is not the way of noble men.

    وَغلاءُ مهر البكر غَيرُ غَلاء

    I made her dowry costly, and was not stingy;

a maiden's costly dowry is no extravagance.

Whoever courts a beauty raises her dowry:

    beautiful women detest misers.

If every fallen man's elevation lies

in being lampooned, then here is ample satire.

What raises you so high that you tell me, “Borrow

a lineage, and I will answer you—you are no match for me”?

Get lost, Ali! Your only equal is what

flows from the guts and bowels.

Among the wonders—and wonders are many—

is a bald woman mocking one with luxuriant hair.

Do you abuse me for no sin I committed

except a reproach born of affection and brotherhood?

Reproach bears witness to affection for its recipients

    in most things and circumstances.

Why, then, did you repay reproach with coldness

    that invites hatred and animosity?

You exchanged my reproach for that,

like someone taking fire in exchange for scorching sand.

If you show pain at my reproach of you,

the donkey likewise farts for fear of the cauterizer.

I knew your rank to be lodged in the depths,

yet now I see you aspiring to the heights.

    You described yourself, saying,

“The lions have feared the dreadfulness of meeting me.”

It is blame enough that you praise yourself for qualities

    that adorn kings and ministers.

Whoever is praised for qualities not his own

finds that praise turning into mockery.

Then you turned to address me, saying plainly,

“Do you feel safe from my violence and my fury?”

For God's sake, O dreaded lion of the lair,

for God's sake, spare the blood of innocent youths!

    لا تَأخُذ الفضلاءَ بِالسفهاء

    Punish the wrongdoer for his sin and his crime;

do not punish the worthy for the fools.

These patches are your father's patches,

bordered with fringes of lice and shit.

Is your spurred spear anything but a needle

whose victim is safe from bleeding?

Were it in an inflamed eye, it would not

    keep that eye from closing.

Can you, with a broken needle like a mote,

    uproot a solid mountain?

I see you, sparrow, threatening a goshawk

with claws that have no sharpness.

Had you fashioned them from a spider's weaving,

you would still lack the strength to weaken or destroy.

Thunder and flash, you fool: no harm comes to

the lions of the thicket from puppies' barking.

I see, Ali, that you have made your sky

lie flat beside your dusty earth.

Did you set it there metaphorically, or did you lack

the power to raise it high?

How much more fitting for a town to embrace you,

counting you there as a man with earth and sky!

The horsemen of your speech—their horses stumble,

tripping whenever they start to run.

They turn balky whenever you spur them, so no one

    fears a sudden, sweeping raid.

    Your chosen, sharp, keen-edged sword

has had its keen edge blunted by faludh pudding.

Do you tell me, “Had you any sense, you would not obey

every man who goes about spreading slander”?

Pardon me: I did not know that reason was reserved

    for every furrier alone.

Nor did I know the proverbs once coined

about you by the clan of sages.

How strange your claim to fidelity, when it is,

by my life, rarer in you than a phoenix!

I am indeed ashamed, by God, of

your prolonged, shameless claim to it.

Had you not made a pact with me that

our kindnesses should not be mixed with coldness?

Yet you broke the bonds that brotherhood had fastened

and mixed debris into water of purity.

If you reject my words and deny them,

Abu Muhammad is the fairest of witnesses.

I wished to please you, but pleasing a heretic

means angering the Lord of blessings.

These are your traits, their robes spread abroad,

their names and reports well known.

Why, then, do you claim that their burrows

obsess me? Is this my rightful reward from you?

By God, what virtues and achievements those are!

They have indeed delighted the eyes of enemies.

    O incense-fumed billy-goat, tell me: when

did you win the race in the arena of the eloquent,

so that you declare, plainly and stammeringly,

“Is the ocean measured against sandy waterholes?”

You seek to extinguish my lights; yet less than what

you have sought is to quench Dhuka's light—the sun's.

The sun's beauties are not hidden, even if

the veil of storms covers it.

Do you challenge pure gold with worthless counterfeit coin?

How far apart are deep darkness and light!

You say, “If I wished, rhymes would be

nothing but possessions beneath my banner's shade.”

Well done, master of the banner, ascending

through his pride to the ranks of chiefs!

Your lowly ambition disdained that you should be seen

    soliciting princes and ministers.

Tell me: are you Ma'n ibn Aws in ambition,

or one of the poets who preceded him,

that you should be considered above common folk,

    let alone ministers and leaders?

You showed no ambition born of dignity; rather,

in boasting, you gave voice to abjection.

Had you been tried—and perhaps that will happen—

by poverty, you would not shame someone who begs.

The prophets sent forth asked for food

and were sorely tried by the affliction of poverty.

Did not Moses approach a village,

seeking food, only for it to refuse him utterly?

No disgrace attaches to someone striving for his livelihood,

unless he brings indecency into his striving.

Do not be deceived by your ease of mind and wealth:

    time mingles hardship with prosperity.

How many a young man's wind blew gently,

only to end in a contrary gale!

The man in need has no power to maintain his pride:

misery has cut away the poor's self-assertion.

The impulses of your poetry are all deceit,

and deceit is the nature of fools.

Had you been content with honest restraint, as

your embellishments claimed, you would not proclaim your lack of wealth.

And your father is Qarun in wealth, in his boot—

how ungrateful man is for blessings!

If your hand holds enough, yet you complain

of poverty, where, then, is richness of soul?

I raced the coursers of my speech before an assembly

and outstripped others with them, in crowds and open ground.

Not as you claimed: that in an empty place

I raced them and won among slow runners.

You adorned what Ibn Qami'a had condemned,

things banished by the law of the true monotheists.

Then you spoke out, saying like a heretic,

“The beginning of reflection is the end of forgetting.”

You judged me ignorant of what you had said

and attributed to me a blind insight.

Had time begun its race with your understanding,

you would have come last among those who understand.

You stripped modesty from my face, though it

is my wrap and my robe among mankind.

Even if a thunderbolt fell, it would leave no mark

on your grim face, so scant of moisture.

This is praise: have you ever heard its like?

You have indeed gathered the virtues of refined men!

By God, I do not know, and I am bewildered

by your nature, contradictory in its aspects.

You forbid the abuse you yourself have uttered

and call it the conduct of the reckless and weak.

Like someone forbidding what he permits himself:

this is the clearest sign of fools.

You are the weakling, if what you said holds sway,

and the reckless one who brings every kind of nonsense.

You aspire to criticize poetry and dismantle it,

yet I see you blundering through it like a blind she-camel.

There is no pleasing understanding in you; rather,

you babble, Ali, and are called intelligent.

If your knowledge resembles this intellect of yours, then

you have stripped yourself of the scholars' adornments.

Your argument, which you explained, is white—

yet it has brought every black calamity.

Tell me, fool: on what grounds did you claim valor

and make yourself an ascent to al-Jawza?

When a man oversteps his bounds in a matter,

on what grounds do you claim unyielding might?

When a man oversteps his bounds in a matter,

the scorpions of hatred creep toward him.

Two things—nothing on earth is more painful than them:

the abasement of the exalted and the ascendancy of the lowly.

Draw your sword, Ali, and confront me!

The brave man has exposed the cowards' secret hearts.

This is the time to charge: come forth boldly,

until you see who the knight of battle is.
