وَإِنand indeed طالَبَone seeking فرّاءٍFarrāʾ بِمَعرفةfor knowledge
وَإِن طالَبَ فرّاءٍ بِمَعرفة
كَباحِثٍlike a searcher طالِبٍseeking فيin رَملَةٍa sandy patch وَشَلاa trickle of water
كَباحِثٍ طالِبٍ في رَملَةٍ وَشَلا
And indeed, one seeking knowledge from Farrāʾ
Though one who seeks fragrance in empty wastes
Is like a seeker looking for a trickle of water in the sand.
Is like a seeker lost in shifting sand,
فيهِin him السَخافةfolly وَالبَغضاءand hatred لاno جرمdoubt (idiomatically)
فيهِ السَخافة وَالبَغضاء لا جرم
مَوجودَتانboth present وَأَماand as for غَيرُother than ذاكَthat فلاthen not
مَوجودَتان وَأَما غَيرُ ذاكَ فلا
In him, folly and hatred, without doubt,
Folly and malice there indeed exist,
Are both present; but nothing else is.
But naught besides. Of that there is no doubt.
