وَقَدand indeed قُلتI spoke حَقاًtruthfully وَالحَقيقةand truth مهيعa clear, open road
وَقَد قُلت حَقاً وَالحَقيقة مهيع
وَهَلand is there? لامرئٍfor anyone فيconcerning قَولةan utterance الحَقthe truth مدفعُa rebuttal
وَهَل لامرئٍ في قَولة الحَق مدفعُ
I have indeed spoken truth—and truth is a broad, open road.
And I have indeed spoken truthfully; truth is a clear, open road.
Can any man ward off a word of truth?
And has anyone a rebuttal to a word of truth?
فَقُلتso I said لَهُto him أَسمعتyou made yourself heard لَوif كُنتyou were منصِفاًfair
فَقُلت لَهُ أَسمعت لَو كُنت منصِفاً
وَأَوجَعتَand you caused pain لَكنbut ماwhat سَتسمعyou will hear أَوجَعmore painful
وَأَوجَعتَ لَكن ما سَتسمع أَوجَع
So I said to him, “You would have made yourself heard, had you been fair;
So I said to him: “You would have made yourself heard, had you been fair;
you have caused pain—but what you are about to hear will hurt more.”
and you have caused pain, but what you will hear will hurt more.”
