ليسthere is not فيin الدُّنياthe world جميعاًin its entirety
ليس في الدُّنيا جميعاً
بلدةٌa city مثلlike دمشقِDamascus
بلدةٌ مثل دمشقِ
There is not, in all the world,
There is no place in all the world
a city like Damascus.
Like Damascus in my eyes
ويسلينيَand diverts me عنهاfrom her
ويسلينيَ عنها
فيin سبيلِthe path of اللّهِGod عشقيmy passion
في سبيلِ اللّهِ عشقي
And what diverts me from her
And my love for it would solace me
is my passion in God's cause.
On the path of God were I to lose it
والتُّقىand piety الأَصلُthe foundation ومنand whoever يتbeginning of 'forsakes'
والتُّقى الأَصلُ ومن يت
رُكُهاending of 'forsakes it' يَشْقَىsuffers ويُشقيand makes others suffer
رُكُها يَشْقَى ويُشقي
And piety is the foundation; whoever forsakes
Piety is the root and he who
it suffers and makes others suffer.
Abandons it will suffer misery
كمmany a رشيقٍgraceful one شاغلdiverting عنfrom
كم رشيقٍ شاغل عن
هhim بسهمِwith the arrow الغَزْوِof war رشقيmy shooting
ه بسهمِ الغَزْوِ رشقي
Many a graceful one—what diverts me from
How many a lovely one has been
him is my shooting with the arrow of war.
Distracted from it by the arrow of raiding
وامتشاقُand drawing البيضِthe bright swords يُغنيmakes needless
وامتشاقُ البيضِ يُغني
عنهin place of it بالأَقلامِwith pens مشقيmy writing
عنه بالأَقلامِ مشقي
And drawing the bright swords is made needless
And copying the white script distracts me
by my writing with pens.
