عُذرُ الزَّمانِ بأيِّ وجهٍ يُقبلُ

عُذرُ الزَّمانِ بأيِّ وجهٍ يُقبلُ

ومحبُّكم بالصدِّ فيهِ ويُقتلُ

ومحبُّكم بالصدِّ فيهِ ويُقتلُ

On what grounds can time's excuse be accepted,

How can the blame of time be excused

While, within it, your lover is slain by rejection?

While your lover is rejected and killed

مالي سوى إنسان عيني مُسعداً

مالي سوى إنسان عيني مُسعداً

بالَّمعِ إنسانٌ عليه أُعَوِّلُ

بالَّمعِ إنسانٌ عليه أُعَوِّلُ

I have none to comfort me but the pupil of my eye,

I have no one but a man whose eyes bring me joy

With tears—a person on whom I rely.

A man I rely on when he shines

الَّهرُ ليل كلُّه في ناظري

الَّهرُ ليل كلُّه في ناظري

لا صبحَ إلا وجهُكَ المُتهلِّلُ

لا صبحَ إلا وجهُكَ المُتهلِّلُ

All of time is night in my sight;

The night is pitch black in my eyes

There is no dawn but your beaming face.

No dawn except your smiling face

خيرتمُ بينَ المنيّةِ والنوى

خيرتمُ بينَ المنيّةِ والنوى

لا تهجروا فالموتُ عنيَ أَسْهَلُ

لا تهجروا فالموتُ عنيَ أَسْهَلُ

You gave me the choice between death and separation;

You chose between death and purpose

Do not forsake me, for death is easier for me.

Do not abandon me, death is easier for me

ما كانَ منكرُ فضل حقِّي جاهلاً

ما كانَ منكرُ فضل حقِّي جاهلاً

إن كنتُ أنكر فضلكم أو أَجهلُ

إن كنتُ أنكر فضلكم أو أَجهلُ

Whoever denies the worth of my claim would not be ignorant,

No one who denied my right was ignorant

If I were to deny your excellence or be ignorant of it.

Even if I denied or was ignorant of your merit

يا غائبينَ وهمْ بفكريَ حُضّرٌ

يا غائبينَ وهمْ بفكريَ حُضّرٌ

يا راحلينَ وهمْ بقلبيَ نُزَّلُ

يا راحلينَ وهمْ بقلبيَ نُزَّلُ

O absent ones, yet present in my thoughts;

Oh you who are absent yet present in my thoughts

O departed ones, yet guests within my heart!

Oh you who left yet reside in my heart

ما للسُّلوِّ إلى فؤادي منهجٌ

ما للسُّلوِّ إلى فؤادي منهجٌ

ما للصبابةِ غيرَ قلبي مَنْهلُ

ما للصبابةِ غيرَ قلبي مَنْهلُ

Forgetfulness has no path into my heart;

Solitude has no path to my heart

Passionate longing has no watering place but my heart.

Youth has no spring but my heart

لا تعدلوا عنّي فما لي معدلٌ

لا تعدلوا عنّي فما لي معدلٌ

عنكمْ وليس سواكمُ لي موئلُ

عنكمْ وليس سواكمُ لي موئلُ

Do not turn away from me, for I have no way to turn

Do not turn away from me, I have no substitute

Away from you, and no refuge other than you.

For you, none but you are my refuge

كلُّ الخطوبِ دفعتُها بتجلُّدي

كلُّ الخطوبِ دفعتُها بتجلُّدي

إلاّ التفرُّقَ فهو خطبٌ مُعْضِلُ

إلاّ التفرُّقَ فهو خطبٌ مُعْضِلُ

I have repelled every calamity with my fortitude,

I endured all troubles with patience

Except separation, for it is an intractable ordeal.

Except separation, which is an unsolvable crisis

إذا لم يجدني طيفُكُم في زورةٍ

إذا لم يجدني طيفُكُم في زورةٍ

فلأنني منه أدّقُّ وأَنحلُ

فلأنني منه أدّقُّ وأَنحلُ

If your phantom does not find me on a visit,

If your spirit does not find me in visitations

Then it is because I am slighter and thinner than it.

It's because I have melted and wasted away

لا صبرَ لي لا قلب لي لا غمضَ لي

لا صبرَ لي لا قلب لي لا غمضَ لي

لا علمَ لي بالبينِ ماذا أَفعلُ

لا علمَ لي بالبينِ ماذا أَفعلُ

I have no patience, no heart, no sleep;

I have no patience, no heart, no respite

I do not know what to do in separation.

I know not what to do with this distance

إن تذهلوا عنّي فإنّي ذاهلٌ

إن تذهلوا عنّي فإنّي ذاهلٌ

بهواكم عن ذكركم لا أَذهلُ

بهواكم عن ذكركم لا أَذهلُ

If you are heedless of me, then I am distracted

If you neglect me, I am neglected

By love for you; I never fail to remember you.
