شوقيmy longing الذيwhich لذعتْseared قلبيmy heart لواعجُهُits burning pangs
O dwellers of Egypt—no, by God, you do not share
O dwellers of Egypt, no, by Allah, you have no
my longing, whose burning pangs have seared my heart.
Longing like mine that torments my heart
أَصبحتُI have come to أَطلبُI seek طُرقَthe paths of الصّبرِpatience أَسلكُهاI tread them
قدalready خفيتْbecame hidden عنّيfrom me مناهجُهُits pathways
I now seek the paths of patience, to tread them.
I have resorted to seeking the ways of patience to walk them
Far beyond reach! Its pathways have become hidden from me.
Alas, its paths are hidden from me
إنّيindeed I لمنsurely from كربthe anguish of يومِthe day of البينparting فيin شُغُلٍpreoccupation

لعلَّperhaps ربِّيmy Lord بيومِwith a day of الوصلِreunion فارجُهُits reliever
Indeed, I am preoccupied with the anguish of the day of parting.
I am one whom the day of separation busies with anguish
Perhaps my Lord will dispel it with a day of reunion.
Hoping my Lord will relieve him on the day of reunion

والعينُand the eye بحرُa sea of دموعٍtears فاضَoverflowed مائجُهُits surging tide
In the heart is a fire of cares that its kindler has intensified;
In my heart is the fire of worries, its flames growing
and the eye is a sea of tears whose surging tide has overflowed.
My eyes an ocean of tears overflowing
ماnot قلتُI said إنَّthat فؤاديmy heart مرَّpassed ساكنهُits dweller
إلاَّexcept وبالذِّكرand at the mention منكمof you ثارَarose هائجُهُits turmoil
I never said that my heart's dweller had gone
When I said my heart forgot its dweller
without its turmoil rising at the mention of you.
It flared up at the mere mention of you
متىwhen تُرىI wonder يتسنّىbecomes possible ليfor me لقاؤكمُmeeting you
وتزَدهينيand enchant me كماas أهوىI desire مباهجُهُits joys
When, I wonder, will a meeting with you be possible for me,
When will I get to see you
and its joys enchant me as I desire?
And delight in what I yearn as I wish
القلبُthe heart عندكمwith you قدindeed ظلَّhas remained مُقتضياًseeking repayment

The heart has remained with you, seeking repayment
My heart awaits you demanding
of the debt of reunion—are its needs not fulfilled?
The debt of reunion, will its needs not be met

والقلبand the heart علىover وجهكyour face منwho هيجهroused it
Who hedged your rose with myrtle?
My desire is for your roses behind their fence
And who roused the heart at the sight of your face?
My heart for your face that allured it
أفديI ransom بأبيwith my father حسنكyour beauty ماhow أبهجهradiant it is!
منwhoever أعجبهdelighted him الوصلreunion فماthen not أزعجهdisturbed him
I would ransom your beauty with my father—how radiant it is!
I'd sacrifice my father for your beauty that gladdens
Whoever is delighted by reunion is not troubled by it.
Whoever loves reunion will not be bothered by it
