O dwellers of Egypt, may her sweetness gladden you.

Dwellers of Egypt, there wellbeing is yours

Indeed, my life apart from you has not been sweet.

After you, life did not please me

لا عدمتُم راحةً مِن قربها

لا عدمتُم راحةً مِن قربها

فأَنا من بعدها في تعبِ

فأَنا من بعدها في تعبِ

May you never lack the comfort of her nearness,

I miss the comfort of being near it

for since leaving her I have been weary.

So after it, I'm in hardship

لا تركتُ الغمضَ يغشى ناظري

لا تركتُ الغمضَ يغشى ناظري

لا ولا طيبَ الكرى يأنسُ بي

لا ولا طيبَ الكرى يأنسُ بي

No, I have not let sleep veil my eye,

Neither does sleep cover my eyes

no, nor let the sweetness of slumber befriend me.

Nor the delights of the land comfort me

لا وأَيام اجتماعي بكم

لا وأَيام اجتماعي بكم

إنها كانت زمان الطَّربِ

إنها كانت زمان الطَّربِ

No—by the days we were together!

Nor the days I gathered with you

They were indeed a time of joy.

Those were the days of joy

أَنتمُ روحي وأَنتم منيتي

أَنتمُ روحي وأَنتم منيتي

أَنتم سُؤلي وأَنتم أَربي

أَنتم سُؤلي وأَنتم أَربي

You are my soul, and you are my heart's desire;

You are my soul and my wish

you are what I ask for, and what I long for.

You are my question and my Lord

ليتني لما دعا داعي النَّوى

ليتني لما دعا داعي النَّوى

بيَ من بينكمُ لم أجِبِ

بيَ من بينكمُ لم أجِبِ

Would that, when the herald of parting called

If only when the caller to parting called

me away from among you, I had not answered,

I from among you did not respond

وأَنختُ العيسَ في أَبوابكم

وأَنختُ العيسَ في أَبوابكم

ولأَجواز الفلا لم أَجُبِ

ولأَجواز الفلا لم أَجُبِ

and had made the pale camels kneel at your doors,

I declined the permit at your doors

and had not traversed the desert's heartlands,

And to pass freely I did not consent

وتصبَّرتُ على عتبكمُ

وتصبَّرتُ على عتبكمُ

وتلومتُ بتلكَ العَتَبِ

وتلومتُ بتلكَ العَتَبِ

and had patiently borne your reproaches,

I was patient with your reproach

and had lingered at those thresholds.

And blamed myself for that reproach

بَعُدَ العهدُ بأخباركمُ

بَعُدَ العهدُ بأخباركمُ

فابعثوا أَخباركم في الكُتبِ

فابعثوا أَخباركم في الكُتبِ

It has been long since I last heard news of you;

After long absence from your news

so send your news in letters.

ليتَ مصراً عرفتْ أَنّي وإنْ

When, then, through nearness to you, shall I attain,

When will I gain by your nearness

O my dear friends, success in my quest?

ومتى أَحصلُ بالوصلِ على ال

واصلِ المرتقبِ المقتربِ

واصلِ المرتقبِ المقتربِ

And when, through reunion, shall I find the

When will I gain by joining the joiner

one who comes to join me, awaited and drawing near?

ومتى أَطلعُ في أُفقكمُ

قمراً يجمعُ شملَ الشُّهُبِ

قمراً يجمعُ شملَ الشُّهُبِ

And when shall I rise on your horizon,

When will I see on your horizon

as a moon that gathers the bright stars together?

A moon uniting separated stars?
