أَسىً فمتى أَلقى بوجهكم الفَجْرا
O beloveds of my heart, my night has lengthened since you left,
My beloved friends, after you my night grew long
In sorrow—when shall I greet dawn in your faces?
With sorrow - so when shall I see your face at dawn?
سكنتمْyou dwelt فؤاديmy heart وهوand it فيin نارthe fire of شوقكمْlonging for you

فهلاَّ أَخذتُمْ فيه من نارِه حِذْرا
You have dwelt in my heart, while it burns in the fire of longing for you;
You dwelt in my heart though it burned with longing for you
Why, then, did you not guard yourselves there against its fire?
Why then did you not take heed of its fire?

فهل بحياتي منكم نشأةٌ أُخرى
I lost my life when I ceased to meet you;
Since I lost seeing you, I lost my life
Will my life, then, have another birth through you?
Is there in my life with you another youth?

My solace has indeed turned to loneliness through parting from you,
My intimacy in your absence turned to desolation
As time's kindness turned to harshness after you.
As the world's joy after you turned to gloom

I had been beguiled by the days of union with you,
And I was deluded by the days of being with you
And none beguiled can feel safe from the days.
He who is deluded is unsafe from days

My neighbors, though oppressed, oppress their neighbor
From injustice—earn reward by helping your longing lover.
From injustice they reaped reward in longing for you

My patience has betrayed your love, so seek me out
Another lover [wording uncertain], who can patiently endure being apart from you.
Whether patient or not, it is right to seek patience

Since I left my home, it has become desolate
May my Lord water and guard my abode in Maqra.
Parched and grazing - but my Lord sustained it in my absence

For my chaste, Udhri love is in Adhra.
For my love's excuse comes from me, excusing

The language of an eye, tearful for fear of the day of parting.
The tears of an eye, fearful on the day of parting

And Khosrow's vaulted hall was a mere fragment beside his own.
