اسمُ محبوبي سُدَاسيُّ إذا

اسمُ محبوبي سُدَاسيُّ إذا

سَقَطَ الثُّلثُ فعكسُ الكلِمَهْ

سَقَطَ الثُّلثُ فعكسُ الكلِمَهْ

My beloved's name has six letters; if

My beloved's name is Sudasi, if

one third falls away, it is the reverse of the word.

The third is dropped, the word's reversed,

وإذا قُدِّمَ ثاني شَطْرِهِ

وإذا قُدِّمَ ثاني شَطْرِهِ

فهو سلطانٌ لنا ذو عَظَمَهْ

فهو سلطانٌ لنا ذو عَظَمَهْ

And if its second half is put first,

And if the second hemistich's moved first,

then it is a sultan of ours, possessed of grandeur.

He's a sultan of great stature to us.

ومتى ينقِصُ ثانيه فلا

ومتى ينقِصُ ثانيه فلا

نقصَ يبدو في بناهُ المحكمهْ

نقصَ يبدو في بناهُ المحكمهْ

And whenever its second letter goes missing, no

And if the second's diminished, no

flaw appears in its well-built structures.

Flaw seems in his firmly built nature,

عَرَبيُّ عَجَميُّ نِصْفُه

عَرَبيُّ عَجَميُّ نِصْفُه

كلُّهُ معنىً لِمَنْ قد فَهمَهْ

كلُّهُ معنىً لِمَنْ قد فَهمَهْ

It is Arabic; half of it is non-Arabic;

Arab or foreigner, half of him

the whole has meaning for whoever has understood it.

All of it means, to whom understood.

وإذا ساهمَ في تصحيفه

وإذا ساهمَ في تصحيفه

لكَ باقيه فرمْ أَن تفهمهْ

لكَ باقيه فرمْ أَن تفهمهْ

And if, in altering its dots, a part is played

And if contributed to mangling it,

for you by its remainder, then seek to understand it.

Remainder's for you, try to comprehend it,

وهو إن شاءهمُ لكنّهُ

وهو إن شاءهمُ لكنّهُ

فيه إيضاحٌ لهذي المبهمهْ

فيه إيضاحٌ لهذي المبهمهْ

And it—if he wishes for them—yet it

And if they desired, but he
