May God pardon you—what ails you, O company?
May God forgive you, O people!
You have acted unjustly, though you have a share of the lover's heart.
You have wronged me, though my heart bore love for you.

You pledged to preserve his affection, yet you betrayed him.
You stipulated loyalty, yet betrayed me.
Your mercy, please! Love and pledges are not like this.
Your affection was not what loyalty and covenant dictate.

You made the smitten heart a receptacle for your troubles -
resting place; then lift from it the burden of care for you.
Unburden yourselves of your worries upon it!

If you are in his heart, though home has grown distant,
When you dwelt in the heart and home, the loved ones'
nearness to his loved ones and distance are alike.
Distance and estrangement seemed wrong and separation, a sin.

His sorrow stayed when passionate longing settled beside him
His worries remained when passion remained with him,
to dwell, while patience went far with neighbors who departed.
Lingering, though patience on the verge of collapse.

A phantom kept him awake, traversing the darkness toward him,
A specter that veiled him with night's darkness
when dawn was about to tear open the neckline of night.
And almost burst open the bosom of night at dawn.

You busied yourselves away from him, though yearning for his affection;
You ignored him, though passionate for your love,
as though your approval of your lover were displeasure.
As if being content with your lover were a sin!

I was distraught that morning at the valley bend, when you departed;
I despaired the morning after despairing, when you left,
and that wretch cast me out from among you.
and that abandonment cast me out from among you.

You gained mastery, then disowned my longstanding affection,
You possessed, then denied, my longtime devotion -
as though no acquaintance had ever existed between us.
As if no intimacy had ever existed between us!

May my lifeblood ransom one whom my lifeblood will not reproach,
My soul ransoms those who do not disparage my soul,
when it brings him to judgment, though his ruling is unjust.
When it contends with them, though they insist on wronging me.

He shows you a smile from a kissable mouth with well-spaced teeth,
His smile hides the distraction of a tender kiss,
as though a necklace-string had gathered its ordered pearls.
As if the author of such pearls were natural simplicity.

Before the assault of his glance, I did not know
Before the might of his glances assailed me,
that anything so weak and languid could assault.
I knew not one so weak and frail could be so mighty.

Suppose that from his two earrings there is suspended,
Were earrings hanging from his ears for the sin of passion,
for love's offense, my heart—why, then, is the earring suspended?
My heart would hang for that sin, not the earrings.

And a slender-waisted one—out of concern for his frail waist,
The waist that inspires pity by its delicate form
where his girdle lies, hearts are bound to him.
Bears a belt binding hearts, not clothes, around it.

For his lips and hair, he is envied
are the arak twig by his mouth and the comb by his hair.
By the cheeks' freshness and the comb's order.

On his cheek the glow of wine shines;
The light of wine radiates from his shining cheeks,
his eye is tipsy, and in his mouth is spiced wine.
While joy plays on his mouth and white teeth gleam within.

The script of his beauty adorns his two cheek-lines,
The script of his beauty adorns his smooth cheeks,
and his mole supplies its dots upon his cheeks.
And moles upon his cheeks serve as its diacritics.

Your heart is empty, my friend, so do not reproach
My heart, O intimate friend, is an empty page; do not blame
a heart captured by the mole, the cheek, and the line of down.
A heart whose void the mole, the cheek, and the line fill!

Constriction clings to my heart in love, just as
In passion, clutching holds my heart constantly,
openhandedness clings to King al-Nasir's hand.
As the grasping of the victorious king's hand holds might.

A king who holds barren kingship in his firm grasp,
A sovereign who governs barren rule with his grip,
generous, with no restraint upon wealth in his hand.
Noble, though no wealth fills his hands or is grasped.

A lord around whose person the royal throne is arrayed,
The lord of the royal court protected his person
as the center of an eye surrounds its pupil.
As the pupil's center protects the human being's sight.

A king, from the horizon of whose glory the star of success has
A sovereign whose star of success rose from the horizon of glory -
radiance, while the bird of fortune finds famine in its nest.
Fortune's bird nests only in his refuge in good times or in want.

When the hands of kings are kissed, then by his hands
rugs are kissed in reverence for him throughout time.
The outstretching of eras pay him homage and kiss the palm.

His sleeplessness lets his subjects sleep in peace,
The slumber of subjects and their tranquil dreams -
while carefree kings snore in their sleep.
When they fall asleep dreaming of hopes - is veiled by his vigilance.

The hands of the age's kings have no trickle to give,
The palms of the era's greatest kings cannot compare,
but King al-Nasir's hand is the sea, not a little rock-pool.
For the palm of the victorious king is the sea, not a small pond!

His gifts are cash, not deferred payments; all of them
His gifts are ready money, not promises - all of them -
come promptly—no promise there, nor installments.
He does not delay, promising later payment or installment.

A radiant lord, whose might restrains unbelief's hand,
The ugliest poverty by his spending is beautiful,
just as his bounty crushes poverty's spine.
Just as the emptiest want has meaning through his generosity.

His favors are radiant and never intermittent;
His hands pour without tiring, and his favor is a flood
his kindness is abundant and suffers no belittlement.
With no ebb - it knows nolimits or shores.

He loves the clamor of the grateful when they pray,
He loves the clamor of those who thank, when they pray,
and delights in supplicants' requests when they come.
And desires the request of those confessing, when they petition.

The fragrance of chivalry and fairness emanates from him,
and generosity's incense—not ben oil, laurel, or costus.
Not hypocrisy, pretense, or fraud.

When ignoramuses call him, he is slow to respond,
and our aspirations plunge into the sea of his gifts.
But when the noble call him, he does not delay.

They sucked the teat ofvileness in their cradles -
cisterns and lodgings for the visiting company of his favors.
Glories, though the layers of their ignobility are thick.

When able, they forgive; when they make promises, they keep them;
slow; but called to goodness, they do not delay.
When they give, they enrich; when asked, they give.

Those who seek their doors attain their aims;
noble men, their swaddling bands wrapped around lordliness.
While those with other intents go astray in their quests.

Happy the rule whose gates horses bear
the destitute with wealth's arrow, and did not miss.
The sons of hope every dawn, trotting without stop.

No garden rivals in beauty, as though
If they give, they enrich; if asked, they bestow.
Its foliage were woven by its shimmering streams.

When one with brilliant cheeks leads me to the vivid narcissus,
whoever steps toward any other goal misses.
Followed by a tender sprig of lilac plucked.

its broad shade wears a mantle woven of its blossoms—
With the stream as its diacritics.

Yours are the vast chest and outstretched hand in eminence,
and a glimmer a spark from the fire of his yearning;
And that open cheek and thick sidelock in childhood.

For your admirer, the water of joy and dew -
a veil of modesty before it, never lowered—
While the envier gets the fire and smoke.

your goodness, not the garden, gives the seeker of refuge his enviable lot.
Iraq bent in obedience, and Arab and foreigner submitted.

Ransoming you, of endless generosity, is one concealed
but your bounty is a Nile to the hopeful, without a bank.
Behind a veil of deprivation - your giving is his release.

له عنقٌ إصلاحُ فاسدِه القَطُّ
Your foe is like wax in the fire of his rancor;
The enemy's eye will shed blood, for there flowed
he has a neck whose corruption is cured by severing.
On earth from his veins his darkened gore.

وحاجبُهُ للكُبرِ والعُجْبِ مُمْتَطُّ
May the secluded man, drawn out in his delays, be your ransom,
You defended the sanctity of Islam for victory,
his eyebrow stretched high with pride and conceit.
Giving on the morrow, while only the ravenous wolves gathered.

May a people be your ransom who, in assembly and in giving,
You reconciled and relieved many sorrows for us
have grim faces and featherless arrows.
With the arrows of misfortune in the noble drawing blood.

With your return the truth returned and guidance cleared,
his fresh blood has flowed from his jugulars onto the earth.
The breeze of triumph blew, and tightness eased.

You defended Islam's preserve, granting victory,
You rescued Syria from its ominous neighbor;
on the morning when hairless wolves howled outside it.
The infidels' horde did not stop until they betrayed loyalty.

You charged—how many a calamity have you lifted from us,
You rescued when they attacked, drew near when they transgressed,
whose arrow of misfortune strikes into the noble!
Forgave when they fell short, and gently spoke when they erred.

With your return, truth returned and guidance grew clear;
The Master is not troubled by those whose passion
victory's breeze blew, and the pressure eased.
Is misguidance, and those whose army is a rabble of fools.

You sheltered al-Sham from its neighbor's ill omen;
Many you count, yet few true - their glory
the band of unbelief did not suffice, until another band rebelled.
Is silence, and without guidance, they are a flock of sheep.

You sheltered when they oppressed, and ruled when they transgressed;
You act without injustice, desire without excess,
you charged when they faltered, and softened when they cowered.
Speak without bent, and give without holding back.

So let the lord disregard one whose breast is filled
Distinguish the place of the sincere, for only
with desire, and a people whose army is stuffed with Zutt.
Some people have confused thoughts in their minds.

Their aggression is great, their usefulness slight;
Draw near a loyal friend whose conscience is sound with you,
they—may they never find their good sense—are an untended band.
And do not trust the crocodile whose habit is deceit.

You acted justly, leaving no injustice; rose so high, no limit remained;
The ignorant ones' abode disgusted me; though their
you spoke without falsehood and gave without scarcity.
Snakes sharpened fangs to bite me, I pardoned them.

enemies are people with muddle in their heads.
Some arrogant, some greedy, some twisted inside.

Though many had cheerful faces from your goodness,
nor trust the crocodile, whose habit is swallowing.
And some still showed you their evil inside.

The abode of the ignorant repelled me, so I loathed it,
I exposed my merits without excuse, though the chaste
when its speckled snakes flicked their tongues to bite.
Fled from a debaucher in whom even serpents are ashamed.

They withheld both gifts: acceptance and bounty;
I came to you, throwing glory itself before you,
one is a scant trickle, the other bitter fruit.
Casting for the ears necklaces of its pearls picked up.

Honor me generously and grant me success! I describe
yet whose armpit conceals his evil!
Your beauty - let the envious plotter grieve!

The fortunes of my virtues would surely be revealed, without excuse,
Help me, for the eye of favor is bound
by maidens' aversion to a beard flecked with gray.
By the shackle of deprivation - only your activity releases it.

necklaces for the ears, their pearls choice gleanings.
Is the recompense that seals our bargain.

your kindness, until the shameless envier gloats.

Help me: the very essence of merit is a fettered captive,
My hopes' steeds stretched out to you,
bound by deprivation's shackle, which your generosity can loosen.
So I could ride them to success by your side.

You remain while nothing benefits without you,
its bare fang against a distinguished man of its own people?
Bringing fortune, though incapable of rising or descending.

From me toward you have hastened mounts of requests;
Had you neighbored the poet al-Ma'arri, he would not have said:
with you, their girth-straps stretch toward success.
"Let whoever has a neighbor ask the share"- they would not have needed to ask!

allied with acceptance, with no frustration for them.

Had you been al-Ma'arri's neighbor, he would not have said:
“Who has neighbors asked for bounty, yet giving none?”
