    فما حلَّ فيه الهمُّ إلاّ ليلبثا

    If you two wish, speak of anything but my heart;

    for grief has settled within it only to remain.

    Take the two witnesses to my sincerity and the truth of my love:

    a silent wasting sickness in me, and a passion that speaks.

    فلا تعجلا في أمرهِ وتَريّثا

    Your ailing one’s sickness has surpassed everyone else’s;

    so do not hasten in his case, you two; take your time.

    My enemy pitied me for my loved ones’ coldness,

    and what a plight—one that even my enemy pitied!

    Your pledges have not frayed after separation,

    and far be it from that pledge to fray.

    And through King al-Muzaffar, I triumphantly possess

    good fortune and bounty, old and new.

    Feared for his onslaughts, unyielding save to the finest praise,

    looked to for bounty, easily pleased, of sweet repute.

    The latter of the two lifetimes grew serene through the life of him

    by whose justice the two ʿUmars have today become three.

    فمذ ملكوا لم تلقَ في الدِّين محدثا

    They brought about the suppression of error through right guidance;

    for since they began to rule, you have found no innovation in the faith.

    My flotsam and my paltry verse—you bear its faults

    through your bounty; indeed, the sea bears flotsam.

    فلا فرقَ عندي بين تَاءٍ وبين ثا

    And it has become easy, though thāʾ is a more rugged ascent;

    so to me there is no difference between tāʾ and thāʾ.
