وأُحبكم حُبَّ النُّفوس حياتَها
I long for you as the thirsty long for rain.
I yearn for you with the thirst of the parched for water
And I love you as souls love their lives.
And I love you with the love of souls for their life

Without you, my soul perseveres in its fast

And with remembering you, it forever maintains its prayers

It has not missed its share of sorrow at parting from you,
It missed the share of sorrow from being apart from you
even if it has missed whatever it missed of union with you.
If it missed being connected to you, it missed what it missed

If a youth lacked steadfastness
then I have praised the constancy of my passion for you.
My youthfulness for you I lauded its steadfastness

لا تستطيعُ يدُ الفراقِ شتاتَها
and the necklaces of my joy be gathered together,
And the necklaces of my joy would be gathered
beyond the hand of separation's power to scatter them.
So the hand of separation cannot scatter them

God knows that my eye, since your departure,
God knows that after you my eye
has found no delight in its sleep through longing for you.
From yearning for you did not relish its sleep
