أَضيعَmore neglected منthan فقعِtruffles قاعهاits plain الضائعِthe neglected
أَضيعَ من فقعِ قاعها الضائعِ
I found myself in al-Faqīʿ, driven away,
I saw myself in the desert, lonely,
more neglected than the neglected truffles of its plain.
More lost than the remotest of its lostness,
بعتُI sold بمصرٍfor Egypt دمشقَDamascus منthrough غَررٍrecklessness
بعتُ بمصرٍ دمشقَ من غَررٍ

منّي فيا غبنَ صفقةِ البائعِ
I sold Damascus for Egypt, through recklessness
I sold Damascus in Egypt for trinkets,
of my own—alas for the loss in the seller’s bargain!
What a loss was mine, O seller’s bargain!
صبريَmy patience والقلبُand the heart عاصيانِboth disobedient وماand none

غيرُ همومي وأَدْمعي طائعي
My patience and my heart rebel, and none
My patience and my heart disobey me
but my sorrows and my tears obey me.
Nothing obeys me except my worries and my tears.
