O Salah al-Din, who has set right what was ruined

    by time’s calamities, through justice.

Was it you who made Egypt’s Nile flow to Syria

as bounty, or has a second Nile begun to flow?

Yet your two hands surpass Egypt’s Nile,

for both flow with pure gold.

Your splendid gifts arrived in abundance,

so our hopes greeted them with congratulations.

Robes of honor that pleased the eyes and were delicate,

and whose description exceeded the bounds of possibility.

Gilded, as though they were robes of divine favor

bestowed upon the people of Paradise.

The golden robes gleam with their embroidery,

    beautiful and high in price.

For the turbans are like clouds, and the embroidered bands

    are lightning flashes, gleaming abundantly.

And the lords, wearing them with conceit and pride,

trail their sleeves in defiance of time.

How was al-Imad singled out for the meanest, threadbare robe,

apart from the rest of the chancery’s company?

Does one whose weaving of praise for you

is new deserve the shabbiest rags?

Such is the way of nights: they single out

the deserving man of merit for deprivation.

Your bounty’s far-ranging gifts in Syria have always

brought him an abundance of shawls.

So if Egypt does not bring him greater fulfillment

of his wishes, then protect him from loss.
