Not lifted me, I would have remained in the hollow.
As long as you remain my defender against him
فَضْليmy merit طرادُthe pursuit of الدَّهرِtime غادرهleft it behind
وحظوظُهُand its fortunes كلَّتْgrew weary منfrom الطَّرْدِthe chase
Time's pursuit left my merit behind,
And thorns cannot complain of their crime
And its fortunes grew weary of the chase.
When one's purpose is plucking roses!
غدرَbetrayed الزَّمانُtime بكلِّevery ذيpossessor of حَسَبٍnoble lineage
يأبىrefuses الوفاءَfidelity بعيشهِto his life الرَّغْدِcomfortable
Time has betrayed every man of noble lineage,
The sons of my time concealed his virtues
Refusing to keep faith with his comfortable life.
While my mother's reproach was with me alone
زِدْincrease غَرْسَthe planting of رِيِّكَyour watering ريّهُits irrigation فلقدfor indeed

Give the planting you have watered still more water, for
This is the time to fulfill your promise to me
It has long been a stranger to rain.
The generous one fulfills his vow

ماas long as دمتَyou remain دمتَmay you remain عليهagainst him ليfor me مُعديa helper
The enemy's charge, at its hardest, becomes easy
One who braces his back with hope in you - can he
As long as you remain—may you remain—my helper against him.
Remain in any state but fully supported?
والشوكُand the thorn لاdoes not يشكوcomplain of جنايتَهُits injury
منwhoever كانَhas مطلبَهُas his aim جَنَىthe harvest of الوردِroses
And of the thorn's injury no one complains
Can the essence of my expectations be
Whose aim is the harvest of roses.
Unrealized, not yielding essence?

وعتابُand the reproach of أميmy mother معيwith me وَحْديby myself
My contemporaries concealed its virtues,
Through your grace I subdue the antithesis
And my mother's reproach stays with me alone.
For your grace remains subduer of opposites

Aid me seriously with your commitment - you remain
The generous man surely fulfills his promise.
Despite enemies, ascending in resolve

Can one who has strengthened the back of his hope with you
Be left with his affairs unsecured?

Can the cream of what I hope for
Be its failure to churn forth any butter?

By your bounty, humble the enemy of my merit;
May your bounty never cease to humble the foe.
