    لا أَبتغي غير ما تبعون لي غرضا

    If you are pleased with my suffering, then I am content;

    I seek no aim but what you pursue for me.

    And if you see the heart's healing in my sickness,

    then I find that sickness sweet.

    You called for my torment, so I came to find it

    sweet; I savor sorrow and bitter pain.

    فحاشَ للّهِ أنْ أَبغي بكم عوضا

    I have grown vexed with myself in loving you;

    yet God forbid that I seek a substitute for you.

    وكانَ مثلَ سحابٍ برقُهُ وَمَضا

    God bless the life spent with you and now gone;

    it was like a cloud whose lightning flashed.

    With you, life's tender fruit is close at hand,

    and my heart burns with embers of ghada wood.

    I had never known this coldness from you, nor

    imagined that my love was rejected by you.

    فإنْ أَذنْتُ لشخصي في الحضورِ أضا

    The horizon has darkened in my sight because of your absence;

    but if I grant myself leave to attend, it shines.

    Nor am I the first lovesick man who, when his loved ones

    turned cold, died without fulfilling his desires.

    فقد رأيتُ امتثالَ الأمر مُعْتَرضا

    Command whatever trial and hurt you wish;

    for I find obedience to the command lying before me.

    Blessed are you with Egypt and the home where

    wishes were fulfilled, and with the life made easy.

    By your lives, if you are alone in your merriment,

    remember one weary of life, downcast.

    You are pleased with my departure from you, though I remember you

    showing no pleasure at my journey away from you.

    Could you not trouble yourselves to say a word that would gladden me?

    Alas, your substance has become a mere accident to me.

    Be gracious and ease my breast with your nearness,

    or else explain to me this meaning that has grown obscure.
