ياO مُهدياًone who offers بكتابهِthrough his letter وعتابهِand his reproach
كلَماًwords شَفَتْhealed وكلومَand wounds of لَوْمٍblame شَفّتِwore down
O you who offer, through your letter and reproach,
Words that healed and wounds of blame that wore me down,
حمّلْتَنيyou burdened me أَثقالَheavy weights عبءٍa burden خفْتُهاI feared them
لكنbut علىupon قلبيmy heart لودِّكَfor love of you خَفّتthey grew light
You laid upon me weighty burdens I feared,
Yet, for love of you, they grew light upon my heart.
وأَراكَand I see you لاnot يُؤويكَshelters you إلاّexcept غرفةٌa chamber
تشتاقُهاyou long for it أَطيبْhow delightful بهاit is منas a غرفةchamber
And I see that nothing shelters you but a chamber
You long for—how delightful a chamber it is!
وقنعتَand you were content منfrom طَيْفthe phantom الخيالِof imagination بزورةٍwith one visit
ورضيتَand you were satisfied منfrom برقِthe lightning الوصالof union بخطفةِwith a fleeting glimpse
And you were content with one visit from imagination's phantom,
And satisfied with a fleeting glimpse of union's lightning.
فاكففْso restrain كُفيتَmay you be spared الذَّمَّcensure كفَّthe hand of ملامتيreproach against me
فالعذرُfor the excuse مُتَضحٌclear إذاwhen ماemphatic particle كُفّتِit is restrained
So restrain—may you be spared censure—the hand of reproach against me;
For the excuse is clear when that hand is restrained.
فيin غرفةٍa chamber أَنهارُهاits rivers منfrom تحتهاbeneath it
تجريflow فَفُزْso win منهاfrom it هُديتَmay you be guided بغَرْفَةwith a scoopful of water
In a chamber beneath which its rivers
Flow—so win a scoopful from it; may you be guided.
هيit جَنّةٌa paradise لأُوليfor those possessed of المكارمِnoble virtues هُيِّئتْwas prepared
وكماand as تراهاyou see it بالمكارمwith noble virtues حُفّتِit was surrounded
It is a paradise prepared for those of noble virtues,
And, as you see it, it is surrounded by noble virtues.
لكنْbut تُزَفit is led as a bride إلىto الكرامthe noble لحسنهاfor its beauty
ولأَنتَand you indeed أَولىmost deserving مَنْone who إليهto him زُفّتit was led as a bride
Yet for its beauty it is led as a bride to the noble,
And you are the most deserving of those to whom it has been led as a bride.
بالغْتَyou went too far فيin عتبيreproaching me أَفهلso is there منany أوْبَةٍreturn
وعدَلْتَand you turned away عنfrom وُدّيmy love فهلso is there منany عطفةِkindly turning back
You went too far in reproaching me—is there any return?
And you turned away from my love—is there any kindly turning back?
أناI مَنْone whose صَفَتْare pure لصديقهِtoward his friend نيّاتُهhis intentions
فحكىso it told الذيthat which أَبدتهthey revealed it عماof what أَخْفَتِthey concealed
I am one whose intentions toward his friend are pure;
So what they revealed told of what they concealed.
وعفَتْand faded رسومُthe traces of مطامعيmy ambitions إذwhen عِفْتُهاI spurned them
فمطالبيso my aims عزَّتgrew lofty ونفسيand my soul عفّتwas self-restrained
And the traces of my ambitions faded when I spurned them;
So my aims grew lofty, and my soul kept itself pure.
فاقبلْso accept معاذيريmy excuses وعُدْand return نحوَtoward الرِّضاgoodwill
والحمدِand praise واشْفِand heal مودَّةًan affection قدalready أَشْفَتِhas neared death
So accept my excuses and return toward goodwill
And praise; and heal an affection that has come close to death.
