And I have not forgotten, at al-Zarqa on the day we parted,

fingertips bleeding in bewilderment and remorse.

I turned you red, O Zarqa; indeed I

wept for you until your water was mingled with blood.

My heart stayed behind with them, lingering,

while I differed from them in my resolve and in pressing onward.

Ah, if only I knew: shall I return to them?

And is 'if only I knew' of any use to one enslaved by love?
