Will the bygone time of union return?

Or will the one who sickened me visit me in my lovesickness?

I complain of nothing but passionate love, for it is

An affliction decreed for me from heaven.

No, reproacher: my state in love is well known.

You tried to console me, yet you stir my passion.

Ease up, for reproach is of no avail

To one who tells every reproacher, “Ease up.”

Your approaching me with counsel would have helped me,

If I could have sought release from love.

You laid my passion open to forgetting; yet wearying is

Concealing a secret that lays itself open to tale-bearers.

I have spent my store of patience through my infatuation; is there

A giver of patience, or someone who will lend it?

Can one wasted by love recover, his heart a target

For the arrows of an archer who twangs the bow of glances?

My passion is for a graceful youth who turns with his affection

Toward his lover, yet turns away like one indifferent.

    وضنايَ من صدٍّ يدوم مُبغّضِ

    My complaint is of ever-growing coyness that is dear to me;

And my wasting is from ceaseless, repellent rejection.

Ah, how lovely the water of al-ʿUdhayb, and how lovely

To rinse my mouth with its pure, abundant, sweet waters!

How I grieve for the time of youth! For I

Have found nothing in its stead but regret.

The pledges of beautiful women were broken; indeed, they

Would not have lapsed had my youth not passed.

Youth was the most ample of robes; and only

When it was stripped off did the freshness of my life depart.

How lovely the days of youth, as though they were

The days of our lord, Imam al-Mustadi.

Possessed of radiant splendor, whose light shines forth,

And a resplendent mien and a luminous face.

Our Lord has apportioned happiness and misery

Among humankind, between those who love him and those who hate him.

He spread justice’s shade after it had receded,

And rebuilt justice’s foundation after its collapse.

He surpassed the caliphs and all creation in piety,

And in excellence, generosity, and commendable character.

So live in bliss, Commander of the Faithful, with a reign

That never ends, and happiness that never passes.
