Ah, is there for my bygone life in your courtyard
A welcome renewal and return?
قدindeed غبتمُyou have vanished عنfrom ناظريmy sight ماnot أَذنتْpermitted
قد غبتمُ عن ناظري ما أَذنتْ
للقلبِto the heart شمسٌa sun مَرةًonce بطلوعِfor a sunrise
للقلبِ شمسٌ مَرةً بطلوعِ
You have vanished from my sight; never has
A sun granted my heart even one sunrise.
كنتُI was المشفّعَthe intercessor whose pleas are accepted فيin المطالبِthe requests عندكمwith you
كنتُ المشفّعَ في المطالبِ عندكم
فغدوتُso I became أَطلبُI seek طيفكمyour phantom بشفيعِthrough an intercessor
فغدوتُ أَطلبُ طيفكم بشفيعِ
I was the intercessor you heeded when requests were made;
Yet now I seek your phantom through an intercessor.
أَصبحتُI have become أَقنعُI am content بالسّلامِwith a greeting علىdespite النّوىseparation
أَصبحتُ أَقنعُ بالسّلامِ على النّوى
وبقربكمand near you كمhow often بتُّI spent the night غيرَnot قنوعِcontent
وبقربكم كم بتُّ غيرَ قنوعِ
I have come to be content with a greeting despite separation,
Yet near you, how often I spent the night unsatisfied!
