    Do not reproach a swimming steed for a stumble

    of its foot, when it has borne the vast, surging sea.

    Your noble steed cast its gaze upon the sultan,

    then fell there, hastening to salute.

    It outran the winds in its gallop, and you restrained it

    from them, for it cannot defy you.

    Its strength faltered when it remembered that

    in the pasture it bore you—a lion resting in his lair.

    And when can the wind bear a towering mountain,

    or lightning bear a dark cloud pouring rain?

    So pardon lightning's fall as it travels,

    for lightning falls when it flashes on its way.

    إنَّ الجوادَ لَمَن يُقبلُ العاثرا

    And forgive your steed a stumble that seldom befell it;

    for the generous man is surely one who welcomes the fallen.

    لا كان ناظرها بسوءٍ ناظرا

    And guard against the envier's eye and its evil;

    may its pupil never gaze with malice.

    And remain safe for Nur al-Din, sultan of humankind,

    amid calamities, supporting and aiding him.

    And so long as Salah al-Din endures for his people,

    they will fear no harmful turn of time.
