    وفُزْ باجتماعِ الشملِ قبلَ التفرُّقِ

    Seize the season of bounty for pleasure, and hurry ahead;

    and secure reunion before separation.

    وثم لما نهوى على الأكل نلتقي

    Come, let us race toward Jilliq's [apricots?];

    and there we meet over food for what we love.

    ومن يتعشّقْ ذا الفضائل يشتقِ

    They turn yellow with longing, awaiting our arrival;

    and whoever loves one endowed with virtues must yearn.

    فإنْ تترفّقْ منه تنظرْ وترفقِ

    And what I gazed upon in longing were its bleary eyes;

    so if you seek benefit from it, you will see and find ease.

    When its platters appear, our reason vanishes,

    as the yearning and the alluring meet.

    أَجدّ له عهدُ الرَّحيقِ المعتَّقِ

    For melted honey is embodied in it;

    the covenant of aged wine is renewed for it.

    And it yellowed only in fear of its pickers' hands,

    for it has no safety from the passerby.

    فيا عجبي من جمرةِ المتعلِّقِ

    It resembled embers suspended in the open air;

    oh, how I marvel at the lovestruck one's ember!

    فيا حيرتي من نجة المتألِّقِ

    As though earth's stars were above its branches;

    oh, how bewildered I am by the gleaming [star?]!

    فَمَنْ يَرَها مثلي يحبَّ ويعشقِ

    And its gardens have crimson cheeks;

    so whoever sees them as I do will love and adore.

    They appeared among the branches' leaves, as though they were

    balls of gold in hammered silver.

    Their trees shed them, as though they were

    dinars rising in money changers' hands.

    And the apricots of al-Zaki's orchard, with their honey—

    their testimony is decisive: vouch for it and believe.

    My companion says in Damascus, in surprise:

    'Have you no orchard?'—the words of one concerned.

    So I said: to Bab al-Barid and its market

    come Jilliq's orchard harvests, for people like us.

    And if I had a share in al-Sahm, I would find for myself

    what I seek, and my comfort, in the season of fruit.

    If you buy my apricots from the market,

    then mine is only the pleasure of the shopper.

    And I have no close ties with the orchard owners

    that would let me climb within their enclosures.

    Generous men—in winter I trust their friendship,

    but in summer they forget my covenant.

    And there is none who gives, hosts guests, and earns

    my praise but al-Muhyi, generous and blessed with success.

    أَمنْ أَجلِ يومٍ واحدٍ قلتَ لي اسبقِ

    And that is one day, no more;

    was it for one day that you told me, 'Hurry ahead'?

    Yet if I were told of a banquet invitation in China,

    I would kindle for it the yearning of one burning with desire.

    So if you reach Jilliq before me, kindly cast abroad

    my words, which call to benefactors, and soar aloft.

    Perhaps a generous man will be stirred to host me

    with an apricot upon my arrival, and carefully select it.

    وقلْ عن صبوحي كيف شئت ورقِّقِ

    So do not forget, Nashw al-Din, my mind's intoxication;

    and speak of my morning draught however you wish, and make your words tender.

    And bring it, and help me, and take from my poetic inspiration

    a perfume merchant's caravan of praise—and be fragrant.
