إليكَto you أَمِيرَCommander المُؤْمِنينَof the Faithful تَعسَّفَتْshe crossed tracklessly
بِنَاwith us البِيدُthe deserts هَوْجَاءُheadlong النّجاءِin swift running خَبُوبُa brisk trotter
To you, Commander of the Faithful, she has crossed
To you, O Commander of the Faithful, the deserted dwellings have become desolate,
the trackless deserts with us—a wildly swift, trotting she-camel.
Their vestiges effaced as if they were written on seeeping dunes.
وَلَوْand if لَمْnot يَكنْhad been قُدَّامَهاahead of her ماnot تَقَاذفَتْtossed back and forth
جِبَالٌmountains بِهَاwith her مُغْبَرَّةٌdust-covered وسُهُوبُand plains
And had he not been ahead of her, she would not have been tossed
Had it not been for her presence before them, the mountains would not have crumbled,
by dust-covered mountains and plains.
With dusty slopes and ridges.
فَتىًa young man هُوَhe مِنْfrom غَيْرِother than التَّخَلُّقِaffectation مَاجِدٌnoble
وَمِنْand from غَيْرِother than تَأدِيبِinstruction by الرِّجَالِmen أَدِيبُwell-mannered
A young man, noble without affectation,
He is a youth not needing to feign valor,
and well-mannered without instruction from men.
Nor to train to have a noble spirit.
عَلاَsurpassed خَلْقُهhis physical form خَلْقَthe physical form of الرِّجالِmen وخُلْقُهُand his character
إذاwhen ضَاقَgrew narrow أخْلاَقُthe characters of الرِّجالِmen رَحِيبُbroad
His physical form surpasses men's, and his character,
His nature transcends that of men, and his character,
when men's characters grow narrow, is broad.
When the morals of men grow narrow, is most generous.
إذَاwhen شَاهَدَhe was present with القوَّادَthe commanders سَارَhe marched أَمَامَهُمْahead of them
جَرِيءٌbold عَلَىin facing ماwhat يَتَّقُونَthey fear وَثُوبُquick to spring
When he is with the commanders, he marches ahead of them,
When the warriors march forth, he strides ahead of them,
bold in facing what they fear, quick to charge.
Boldly daring what they fear and avoid.
وإنْand if غَابَhe was absent عَنْهُمْfrom them شَاهدَتْهُمْattended them مَهابَةٌawe
بهاby it يَقْهَرُhe subdues الأعْدَاءَthe enemies حِينَwhen يَغِيبُhe is absent
And if he is absent from them, awe of him attends them,
If he becomes separated from them, they are filled with awe of him
by which he subdues his enemies while absent.
By which he subdues the foe when absent.
يَعِفُّhe is chaste وَيسْتَحْيِيand he is modest إذاwhen كانhe was خَالِياًalone
كماjust as عَفَّhe was chaste واسْتَحْيَاand he was modest بِحَيْثُwhere رَقِيبُa watcher
He is chaste and modest when alone,
He is chaste and modest when alone,
just as he is chaste and modest where a watcher is present.
As he is chaste and modest when watched.
