مِنَout of الخَوْفِfear إِلاَّexcept بالعُيونِwith the eyes اللَّوَامِحِglancing
Peace upon the house that we do not visit
Peace be upon the house we dare not visit
out of fear, except with glancing eyes.
Save by glances furtive and features veiled,
وَلَوْلاَand were it not for حِذَارُfear of الكَاشِحينَthe ill-wishers لَقَادَنِيwould lead me

And were it not for fear of ill-wishers, I would be led
Did fear of censors not forbid, desire
to it by love, as one leads a docile horse.
Had led me to its threshold, hot and wild.
