قَضَىdecreed اللّهُGod ياO أَسْماءُAsma أَنْthat لسْتُI am not زَائِلاًceasing
أُحِبُّكِI love you حَتّىuntil يُغْمِضَcloses العَيْنَthe eye مُغْمِضُone who closes
God has decreed, O Asma, that I shall never cease
to love you until someone closes my eyes.
فَحُبُّكِFor love of you بَلْوَىan ordeal غَيْرَexcept أَنْthat لاَnot يسُوؤُنِيit grieves me
وإنْand even if كَانَit were بَلْوَىan ordeal أَنَّنِيthat I لَكِtoward you مُبْغِضُone who hates
For loving you is an ordeal; yet it would not grieve me,
even if it were an ordeal, to hate you.
فَيَاSo, O كَبِداًa liver مِنْfrom لَوْعَةِsearing pain الحُبِّlove كُلَّماwhenever
ذكرتُI remember وَمِنْand from رَفْضِsurging الهَوَىpassion حِينَwhen يَرْفُضُit surges
Ah, how my liver suffers from love's searing pain whenever
I remember, and from passion's surge when it surges,
وَمِنْand from عَبْرَةٍa sob تُذْرِيscatters الدُّمُوعَthe tears وَزَفْرَةٍand a sigh
تُقَضْقِضُshatters أَطْرَافَthe edges الحَشَاthe entrails حِينَwhen ننْهَضُwe rise
and from a sob that scatters tears, and a sigh
that shatters the edges of my entrails when we rise.
فَمِنْSo, from حُبِّهاlove for her أَبْغَضْتُI hated مَنْthose whom كُنْتُI was وَامقاًloving
وِمْنand from حُبِّهاlove for her أَحْبَبْتُI loved مَنْthose whom كُنْتُI was أُبْغِضُI hate
So, for love of her I hated those I once loved,
and for love of her I loved those I once hated.
إذاwhenever أناI رضتُI trained النَفسَthe soul فيin حُبِّlove غَيْرِهاsomeone other than her
إذَاsuddenly حُبُّهاlove for her مِنْfrom دُونِهِbefore it يَتَعَرَّضُit interposes itself
Whenever I train my soul to love another,
suddenly my love for her rises to bar its way.
فَيَاSo, O لَيْتَنِيif only I أَقْرَضْتُI lent جَلْداًa steadfast man صَبَابَتِيmy ardent longing
وأَقْرَضَنِيand lent me صَبْراًpatience عَلىagainst الشَّوْقِlonging مُقْرِضُa lender
Ah, if only I could lend a steadfast man my passion,
and some lender would lend me patience to endure longing.
